Nether Poppleton & the river Ouse - 9 miles
Details
A walk previously led way back in 2019 and this time we shall be doing it in reverse! A lengthy but easy walk in the flat countryside that lies just to the west of York. Our outward leg takes us through the village of Nether Poppleton before we pick up the riverside trail all the way to our lunch stop at Moor Monkton where the Nidd joins the Ouse. Our return leg is largely along field paths.
Our starting point is outside the Norman church in Nether Poppleton, which has a picturesque setting beside a restored tithe barn and village pond. The start point is at the end of Church Lane, a no-through road with parking outside the church and along the approach road. Car sharing advised to reduce our impact on the village and to ensure you don’t have to park too far from the start point!
Start location: St Everilda’s Church, Church Lane, Nether Poppleton, YO26 6LF. Look out for a brown sign pointing to the Tithe Barn & Church at the Church Lane junction.
The walk will be led at a steady pace: not too fast, not too slow. Please be ready to start walking at the advertised time.
Walk fee: £3. No dogs please. Bring packed lunch/drink/snacks with you.
After-walk refreshment at the White Horse in Upper Poppleton, a five minute drive along the main through road – turn right out of Church Lane and follow the road until you come to the village green with the pub and a small rank of shops on the l.h.s. The pub has a car park to the rear and there is also parking available in front of the shops (should the small pub car park be full).
I have no formal walk leader or first-aid qualifications and the Group does not gave insurance. When you RSVP for any walk, you accept that you remain responsible for your own safety at all times. You are required to respect the walk leader and be mindful of the safety of others. Please keep to the pace of the group and don’t go off ahead even if you think you know the route.
