EASTER SATURDAY

A good length but undemanding jaunt in the flat or gently undulating land in the Saxton area (near Tadcaster/Aberford/Garforth), also accessible from the A64 between Leeds & York and a stone’s throw from where The Battle of Towton took place in 1461, where 30,000 men perished on Palm Sunday. Whilst in the area, you may wish to visit the memorial on the B1217 between Saxton & Tadcaster.

Our route uses quiet roads, country tracks and field edge paths. En route we pass the 13thc Hazlewood Castle, built from the local magnesium limestone and towards the end of the walk, we pass the Lead church, sat forlornly in the middle of a field !

The walk will be led at a steady pace: not too fast, not too slow. Please be ready to start walking at the advertised time.

Walk fee: £3. No dogs please. Bring packed lunch/drink/snacks with you.

Meeting point/After-walk refreshment: the Greyhound Inn in Saxton. This is a 13thc Sam Smiths pub, so be prepared to pay for your drinks in cash. Postcode is LS24 9PY. Roadside parking only.

I have no formal walk leader or first-aid qualifications and the Group does not have insurance. When you RSVP for any walks, you accept that you remain responsible for your own safety at all times. You are required to respect the walk leader and be mindful of the safety of others. Please keep to the pace of the group and don’t go off ahead even if you think you know the route.
