PROMPT START DUE TO LIMITED DAYLIGHT

A walk from the historic village of Stamford Bridge, just inside the border of the East Riding. SB is 7 miles east of York on the A166.

The walk starts from the car park on Viking Road, close to the junction with the A166 immediately over the bridge on the river Derwent (if travelling from the York side). Postcode is YO41 1BS.

The outward leg is a peaceful stroll alongside the river and having arrived in the village of Low Catton we make our way back along a quiet lane before picking up the old railway trackbed and crossing the viaduct.

The famous battle of Stamford Bridge took place in 1066 when King Harold defeated King Hardraada’s Norwegian army thus ending the Viking’s claim to the English throne.

The walk will be led at a steady pace: not too fast, not too slow. Please be ready to start walking at the advertised time.

Walk fee: £2. No dogs please.

After-walk refreshment at The Three Cups on the edge of the village.

I have no formal walk leader or first-aid qualifications and the Group does not have insurance. When you RSVP for any walk, you accept that you remain responsible for your own safety at all times. You are required to respect the walk leader and be mindful of the safety of others. Please keep to the pace of the group and don’t go off ahead even if you think you know the route.
