Bewerley Moor & the Coldstones Cut - 8.5 miles
Details
NEW WALK!! A hilly, scenic walk in Nidderdale two miles out of Pateley Bridge. We do a circuit of Bewerley Moor and visit the free attraction known as The Coldstones Cut, a massive stone sculpture created by the artist Andrew Sabin. You are able to walk through this to viewing areas.
The lower area takes you to a viewing platform which overlooks the colossal Coldstones Quarry at Greenhow Hill. At 1,400 feet above sea level, this is one of the highest quarries in Britain.
At the higher level of the sculpture, an orientation plate around the wall tells you what you can see in the distance. The North York Moors are visible and there are views along Nidderdale and across to Wharfedale.
Also there is the Toft Gate Kiln, built around 1860. Information boards tell you about the history and the lime making process.
The walk starts from a free car park on the B6265 at Toft Gate Farm Shop & Café – please only park here if you are going into the café afterwards. Alternatively, you can park at the Coldstones Cut car park, a short distance further on (if travelling from Pateley Bridge). Its only a 5min walk from here to our start point. Postcode of Toft Gate is HG3 5BJ.
Directions: from Pateley Bridge, continue to follow the main through road B6265 down the high street, over the bridge & then past the showground. Continue up the steep hill and you will reach our start point two miles from PB centre. There is a sign for the farm shop/café – continue driving past if parking at the alternative car park.
The walk will be led at a steady pace: not too fast, not too slow. Please be ready to start walking at the advertised time.
Walk fee: £3. No dogs please. Bring packed lunch/drink/snacks with you.
After-walk refreshment at the Toft Gate café which is on two levels as well as having an outdoor seating area.
Thanks to Mark Davies for providing this walk after completing the route himself, providing photo’s & walk instructions!
