A walk not led since 2022.

A scenic walk within the confines of Rosedale, starting from the pleasant village of Rosedale Abbey. This isn’t a difficult walk but you need to be comfortable with both the length and a few steady climbs with one steep ascent of 10/15 mins duration.

From the village green, we head through the churchyard and past the remains of the Priory before walking through an avenue of trees, around the turning circle in the caravan & campsite, across a footbridge over the local stream, up some rickety steps before crossing a field on stone trods and up onto a quiet lane. That’s the first 15mins!!

Once we’ve left the lane, we walk through a series of fields to the hamlet of Thorgill where we pick up the village road to its conclusion at which point it continues as a track and ultimately a bridleway. This section affords us a continuous vista across Rosedale from our elevated (but not high) position above the valley floor.

Past farms and across fields, we head over to the other side of the valley and embark on our steep 10/15min climb, which brings us up onto the old railway trackbed and a solid grass (sometimes tinder) track, which is the main length of our return leg.

As we walk along, we see some great examples of Rosedale’s industrial age, passing the remnants of lime kilns, stone kilns and miners cottages, as well as taking in more pleasant views around Rosedale from our high-level route on the other side of the valley.

Eventually we drop down from our elevated route, cross a road and traverse several fields to find ourselves on the other side of the stream we crossed at the start of the walk and back to our start point via the caravan and campsite.

The walk will be led at a steady pace: not too fast, not too slow. Please be ready to start walking at the advertised time.

Walk fee: £3. No dogs please. No morning break and lunch will be at a cafe although you can bring your own provisions to consume nearby if you wish – bear in mind we could be a while in the café if there are quite a few of us.

Note: no mobile reception in the area.

START LOCATION: Rosedale Abbey village green. Roadside parking along several streets. Public toilets are a couple of minutes walk away – follow the sign from the green. Postcode YO18 8SA. There is also a small free car park across the road from the village green, which is normally (but not always) available for public use.

LUNCH STOP: We will be having our lunch break at the Dale Head tearoom (you can find a place to sit nearby if you don’t wish to partake). Their menu includes toasties, savouries, sandwiches & cakes – they may possibly be offering soup & jacket spuds as well. Toilet available – one at a time!

After-walk refreshment: pub & tearoom options, we’ll see what people’s preferences are on the day.

I have no formal walk leader or first-aid qualifications and the Group does not have insurance. When you RSVP for any walk, you accept that you remain responsible for your own safety at all times. You are required to respect the walk leader and be mindful of the safety of others. Please keep to the pace of the group and don’t go off ahead even if you think you know the route.
