YYC Data Meetup: From Earth Observation to Geospatial Applications
Details
It’s the February YYC Data Meetup!
Join us for an evening of talks and conversation focused on spatial data, geospatial analytics, and earth observation.
From building geospatial applications to interpreting satellite imagery with machine learning, we are exploring how teams use spatial data to understand the world and make better decisions in practice.
Location: Calgary Central Library, Room 3-16B
Date/Time: February 10, 2026 @ 5:15pm
Agenda
- 5:15 PM: Doors Open
- 5:30 PM: Speaker Presentations + Q&A
- 7:00 PM: Networking
- 7:30 PM: Wrap up
### The Speakers
1. David Hurley – Solutions Architect, Databricks
Topic: Building Geospatial Data Applications
Bio: David is a Solutions Architect at Databricks working in the Energy and Utilities space. He brings over a decade of experience across software engineering, data science, and analytics, with a strong background in geospatial and environmental data.
The Talk: David will share how organizations move from large scale spatial analytics to fast, interactive geospatial applications, focusing on practical architectures and patterns for serving spatial insights.
2. Matthew Mann – Machine Learning Engineer, AbaData
Topic: Earth, Viewed by AI: Using Deep Learning to Visually Interpret the World
Bio: Matt is a Machine Learning Engineer at AbaData with nearly a decade of experience applying ML and AI across industries including energy and agriculture. He also builds creative AI tools and platforms outside of his day to day work.
The Talk: Matt will explore how computer vision transforms satellite imagery into high value spatial datasets. He will walk through a real-world case study mapping thousands of kilometres of previously undocumented pipeline routes.
3. Ellie Jones – Machine Learning and Data Science Lead, Wyvern
Topic: A World of Possibilities: Earth Observation Data
Bio: Ellie leads machine learning and data science at Wyvern, a Canadian earth observation startup. Her work focuses on making hyperspectral and earth observation data more accessible and useful.
The Talk: Ellie will introduce the earth observation data ecosystem, how to get started working with EO data, and how AI is changing the way we analyze our planet.
Who is this for? Data professionals, engineers, analysts, researchers, and anyone interested in spatial data and real-world applications.
