中文之友会 is an online initiative that has been running since early 2021. It is an online discussion group for intermediate and advanced learners of Mandarin where we discuss a specific topic each week (see 2023 Topic Index.)

中文之友会 is run by a small group of Mandarin teachers from different cities in Australia, and our aim is to provide a safe and comfortable space for intermediate and advanced learners of Mandarin to come and practise spoken Mandarin with us and other learners around the world.

This event:

  • is FREE. We see it as a community project and a way in which we can give back to the society using our experience.
  • is on every Thursday (20:00 at GMT+10).
  • is run by professional Mandarin teachers from different parts of China and Taiwan.
  • typically can offer learners a practice opportunity of 1:2 ratio (1 native to 2 non-native) in breakout rooms.

This event it NOT:

  • a language excange. We are only speaking in Mandarin, and we don't want you to be only ever practising self-introduction. You will get to meet people from all walks of life and different parts of the world - all passionate about Mandarin.
  • a Chinese lesson. Even though the native speakers are professional teachers, in this event, their role is not to "teach." Without interrupting the flow of the conversations, they will however provide some feedback, support and guidance using the chat function.
  • for beginners. You need to have at least HSK Level 3 and be working towards Level 4 or higher.

The initiative is designed to be stress free, so just come when you have time and no need to feel bad when you can't come.

To join, you will need to contact Stanley via Facebook Messenger (www.facebook.com/syswang) and he will arrange a 10-15min interview with you to make sure you have the minimum proficiency level required.
We currently have regular attendees from all over Australia (with people from American, Japanese, Malaysian, British, Canadian and various other backgrounds), as well as people who are currently based in France, Indonesia, Turkey. This year, we are looking forward to welcoming more learners to join us.
