It could be argued that the current focus of the interior design profession in India is largely focused on aesthetics, luxury, and material concerns of the newly prosperous urban middle class. While there’s nothing necessarily wrong with this trend, it’s quite possible - and perhaps crucial - to expand the sphere of influence that Indian designers of urban spaces have, so that the entire spectrum of the population can benefit from what they have to offer. And in fact, many space designers are indeed working in this domain. They’ve purposefully moved away from the elegant drawing rooms and boutiques of the elite, and chosen to work amongst those whose needs are concerned more with the basic human dignities of shelter and comfort - designing spaces for those segments of society that are underserved and overlooked.

We would like to invite all stakeholders who design, use, and occupy urban spaces - architects, interior designers, government officials, academics, entrepreneurs, consumers, students, and laypeople - to discuss how the discipline of design can be used to make the lives of the underprivileged a little better.

We would like to invite speakers from designers who have worked on socially significant projects as well as others from the industry and government who are concerned. Design students who have worked on socially significant projects are also invited to display their work in addition to participating in the discussion themselves, as they represent the future potential for what we all can do to make our urban spaces more liveable for everyone.

Whether you have studied design or are simply fascinated by it, whether you want to interact with fellow design professionals or simply listen to what the design pundits think, be sure to join in.
