Montana, in the 1920s: Here, the two very different Burbank brothers, Phil (Benedict Cumberbatch) and George (Jesse Plemons), run a profitable cattle ranch. The only problem is that they can’t stand each other—Phil is a grumpy old man, and his brother couldn’t care less about the cattle or Phil’s constant taunts. But the trouble really begins when George’s new wife Rose (Kirsten Dunst) and her son Peter (Kodi Smit-McPhee) from her first marriage move in with them on the ranch.

Jane Campion crafts a distorted mosaic of masculinity, complete with all the accompanying evils, misfortunes, and horrors. Even in the breathtaking landscape, there are signs that something is seriously amiss here. And Phil, played with verve by Cumberbatch, is a quintessential Campion character you won’t soon forget.
