November Edition: The use of R in public administration

Details
This meetup is hosted by the Statistical Office of the Canton of Zurich
Intro: R: One tool to rule them allPeter Moser, Statistical Office
Talk 1: Read and process unstructured data with RMax Grütter, Statistical Office
Sometimes we need data that is not available as a neat table. Using the example of raw data in a large number of pdf files we show a way to collect, clean up and process unstructured data with R.
Talk 2: Mastering Corporate Design with RAndrea Schnell and Thomas Lo Russo, Statistical Office
We are the official source of statistical information about the Canton of Zurich. It is essential that our publications and data-products are visually associated with our organization. We've built a variety of R-functions that allow us to generate ready-to-publish plots, pdf-reports and XLSX tables which are in line with our CD guidelines.
Talk 3: Illustration of pupils' diversity with R
Flavian Imlig, Zurich State Department of Education
The diversity in kindergarten classes in the canton of Zurich varies widely between different regions of the canton. In order to give a comprehensive picture of in-class diversity and the regional differences, nationalities and first language of children are transformed into typical class compositions. The result is a collection of mosaic plots of very homogenous and very heterogeneous regions. We will discuss the implementation of the data-transformation as well as the plots in this talk.
Talk 4: Making Public Data Public
Christoph Sax, Christoph Sax Data Analytics http://www.christophsax.com/
www.dataseries.org (http://www.dataseries.org/) is a data website that automatically collects, visualizes and distributes a wide range of public data. In this talk, I will show how my experiences with R in public data production led to an attempt to collect Swiss data series in a single place.
