Martin Mächler has been involved in R development from almost the beginning (1993), a founding member of the R Core team in 1997. With today's 13'500 R packages on CRAN, a few 1000s on Bioconductor, and more in non-curated public repositories, there are tens of 1000s of R programmers for a few millions of useRs.
