Linking Register Data: Navigating Opportunities and Limitations
Following a mandate from the Cantonal Parliament, the Statistical Office of the Canton of Zurich has developed a new dataset that consolidates data from various federal and cantonal sources, primarily using register data. The initiative was motivated by the lack of comprehensive data on the financial situation of family households and the need for data-based assessments of the potential impact of social policy reforms under discussion in parliament. For instance, tax records at the time lacked detailed information on taxable income components of households and did not include non-taxable income sources such as social welfare or supplementary benefits. Using the linked data, we can now comprehensively examine the financial situation of households. However, no data is perfect. In this talk, I will share insights gained during the data preparation process, highlighting both the new analytical opportunities the data presents and some of its limitations.
