The tormented scientist Victor Frankenstein (Oscar Isaac), haunted by a difficult childhood and the death of his mother, becomes obsessed with defying death. He receives funding from a wealthy industrialist (Christoph Waltz) to create a new form of life. Victor succeeds in his monstrous experiment, by assembling and animating a sentient creature (Jacob Elordi).

Exploring themes of rejection, ambition, abandonment, and humanity's capacity for cruelty, the film focuses on the complex and tragic relationship between creator and creation.

Written and directed by the acclaimed Guillermo del Toro (Pacific Rim, Mimic, Pan's Labyrinth, The Shape of Water). The script is loosely based on the 1818 novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus, written by Mary Shelley when she was just 18 years old. Shelley is often called the "mother of science fiction" because her work was one of the first to ground a fantastical premise in a plausible, if not fully understood, scientific framework. Her novel layed the groundwork for a genre that continues to grapple with the relationship between humanity, technology, and science.
