With live music by the Rotterdam Kinematic Ensemble (NL) and the Ensemble Batida (CH).

In the 21st-century, Metropolis is a gigantic city sharply divided between the thinkers (wealthy industrialists and the finance elite), who live in opulent towers above ground, and the working class, who toil endlessly in the dangerous factories far below. The story follows Freder (Gustav Fröhlich), the son of the city's master Joh Fredersen, who falls in love with Maria (Brigitte Helm), a charismatic worker and prophet who preaches hope and peace between the classes. When Freder’s father (Alfred Abel) tries to crush the workers' rebellion using a malevolent, robotic double of Maria, the clash between humanity and technology threatens to destroy the entire city.

This silent masterpiece explores timeless themes of class conflict, industrial exploitation, and the dehumanization of workers by technology.

An apèro will be held after the function.

Directed by Fritz Lang (Woman in the Moon, Die Nibelungen).
