JS Framework Shootout Hackathon!!

Welcome Js-Devs, you are here by cordially invited to JS Framework Shootout Hackathon. This event is all about you flexing your programming muscle and displaying mastery in the framework of your choice.
We are hoping not to trigger the roosterFest method when everyone picks the same framework, but there will be absolutely no roosterBlocking either. We’ll be raffling off some prizes, thanks to our friends at Microsoft. So let’s build something together. They say great minds think alike, but it is from those who don’t that we learn most from. You’ll get all the details at the event but so that you have some recon.
You will build an app which will...

1)      be able to request a reservation for a specific time at one restaurant
2)      get confirmation of availability
3)      show available time slots

Bonus: import a web api, and get a text confirmation through Twilio
All data will be locally stored and you’ll be provided with a JSON and CSS file. So you can just concentrate on the code. Towards the end of the Hack-a-thon we’ll gather together for a group recap. We can discuss ease of use, issues, and benefits one runs into when using a particular frame? We ask that you be creative (Here are 20 JS-Frames worth checking out), and feel free to explore outside your comfort zone. Like Steve Jobs said “stay hungry stay foolish”, who knows, you might just like it! Come, Build, Share!

Teams

Working in a team is highly encouraged so please find yourself a team or if you'd like help finding a team, contact Toby at [masked] with the framework(s) you'd like to use, and your skill level (beginner, intermediate, advanced).

I treated the hackathon as a crash course on learning a new JS framework, however I quickly realized I should have done a little research before I started on this project. I accomplished some of what I set out to do which was "dive in" instead of putting it off until someday.

Thanks for organizing this. The HTML templates were a big help.

Agreed, I had similar approach as well. I had planned to do some homework earlier in the week but it never happened. A familiarity with what tools you are using would be a big plus, but my goal was to learn something new. In the end I just learned how to hack it together with duck tape and glue and without any real substance either. Certainly will change my approach for future events.

I think there's nothing wrong that approach. The #1 goal was really to get everyone to learn and have some hands on experience with the frameworks. I just wanted it to work for devs of varying levels. In retrospect the feature list was a bit daunting and I would have cut it in half.

Thanks for hosting! While I wasn't much help on my team, I still learned a thing or two, and had a lot of fun! It was neat to see all the solutions and get a glimpse of the different frameworks.

  • Courtney Clarke

Lots a fun and I learned couple new approaches.

    March 9

  • Jennifer Shehane

I enjoyed hearing the different approaches to the challenges the app presented. I had a great time overall!

  • Chris Moultrie

Lots of fun. Probably could have used another hour or two, but I can code forever. So maybe the time allotted was fine.

Where's the best place to park?

    March 8

    • Jodie Locklear

Hi Scott, Hypepotamus is located inside The Biltmore on West Peachtree between 5th and 6th St. If you circle around the block (from West Peachtree and turn right on 6th, then right again on Cypress) you can sometimes find a park on the street, but I usually park in the parking garage directly behind The Biltmore accessed from 5th St. It cost $5. Other may know of a free option?

      Thank you Jodie!

Anyone interested in teaming up on an Ember.js implementation? I'm working on a practice version of this app before the hackathon. You can reply here or email me at [masked]

    • Brookes Stephens

I've never used ember but wouldn't mind giving it a try. I have a lot of experience with spine and a decent amount with backbone (even some extjs). I could jump on with you

      March 8

    • William Metz

Hey Brookes, sure! Tom has joined the team as well.

      March 8

  • John Mann

Sorry for the late cancellation, we are releasing tonight. :-(

Here are 2 examples using Ember.js and Angular.js with a RESTful backend.
    Ember http://jsfiddle.net/wesleyhales...
    Angular http://jsbin.com/uwejag/2/

I work for Apigee, and we provide a free BaaS (Backend as a service), so feel free to use it and create something with a scalable backend.

What is the schedule/length of this hackathon? Will it be a normal meet-up of about 2hrs or should we plan to work into the night? Thanks

    March 6

    • Toby Ho

We are planning to stop coding at 10pm and do show and tells for ~1 hr.

      March 8

    • Jodie Locklear

      Thanks!

I have a cold. Don't want to get anybody else sick. I won't be able to attend this event this round. My apologies.

    March 8

  • John Mann

I've never been to this group, and moved here from Seattle a few months ago, so no team. :-) I can do KendoUI, ExtJS, and Node.js (a little). Where do I park and how long is going to be?

    March 6

  • Tom Merrihew

I'm looking for teammates as well, but hoping to use AngularJS. Any Angular developers attending the hackathon?

    March 4

    • Jodie Locklear

Tom I'd like to work with a team using Angular as well. I'm a complete beginner though.

Anyone wanting to see how it's done with Backbone and Marionette let me know. Got lots of screencasts at www.backbonerails.com

    March 4

    • Mike Young

Brian, great job on the screencasts. I went through the first 3 yesterday and hope to do 1 more this week to prep for Friday. Would love to learn from you on Friday.

      March 4

  • Joshua Lunsford

Anyone looking for a teammate? I was thinking about using funnyface.js for the lulz... but since I'm starting an Marionette app at work next week, I figured I would play with it some more. Any takers?

    March 4

  • Melanie Bashir

    I'm looking forward to it!

  • Jason Felds

Curious if RSVP button works when saying you won't attend.

Would you be interested in hosting this at VersionOne? We have a location at Glen Iris and North Avenue, with lots of whiteboards, sit/stand Geek desks, lots of breakout rooms upstairs, and we can trek up to Manuel's Tavern for post-hack festivities!

Let me know what you think. Here are pictures from a previous event we hosted there: http://www.meetup.com/AtlAltDot...
