Atheist “Biblical Nonsense” billboard makes a snafu – misquotes amount of rain in Noah’s Flood
The billboard Reads: “Noah’s Flood, - 8715 inches/hour = Nonsense…….What other Biblical Nonsense Is There?”
Backyard Skeptics, a grass-roots organization who has been placing billboards up for nearly a year in Orange County, made a snafu by miscalculating the amount of rainfall which supposedly, according to scripture, rained for forty nights and forty days and covered the earth with water. The correct amount, according to the height of Mt Everest, would be 8715 inches per DAY. Bruce Gleason, founder of Backyard Skeptics and admittedly the most outed atheist in Orange County, says the mistake was made in preproduction, but he holds the message of Biblical Nonsense still stands strong. “Many Christians believe they can use a bronzed-age book to guide their life, but in reality they are ‘cafeteria Christians’ – they simply pick the verses that suite them and discard the rest. In addition there are many verses that if obeyed, would quickly land a Christian in jail.” Gleason responds. “This proves that even Christians don’t believe the entire Bible, but instead choose which verses are moral and which are not applicable. In my opinion these Christians are more moral than the God they believe in”.
WHO: The largest Orange County based skeptics and atheist group, Backyard Skeptics in coordination with the Freethought Alliance organization who is holding orange County’s only secular conference this weekend on May 19 & 20 at UCI (see freethoughtalliance.org)
WHEN: Thursday May 17, 2012 4:30pm
WHERE: American Legion parking lot, 14582 Beach Blvd, about 3 miles south of the 22 freeway.
WHY: As the Religious Right infuse themselves into politics more and more, the backlash of non-believers becomes more vocal. This billboard let’s other agnostics, atheists, humanists and freethinkers know there is a place to discuss these issues while being good without god.
Backyard Skeptics is the largest skeptic and atheist group in Orange County with over 590 members which advocates atheism as a more tolerant and peaceful position compared with any religion. They promote science, reason and critical thinking. They intend to provide non-believers the same community-oriented services that many churches do including discussion groups, science-oriented field trips and overnight camping events.
Freethought Alliance, an 501C3 organization which consists of 24 secular groups in California, holds an annual conference each May in Orange County. This year the conference is on May 19 & 20 at the University California Irvine.
Mr. Gleason is available for phone interviews and/or statements concerning atheism and any atheist/religious related issue in future media stories.
