About us
We are a group of scientific skeptics (as opposed to 'conspiracy skeptics') with a heavy emphasis on critical thinking. If you don't believe in paranormal ability, ouija boards or ghosts then this group is for you.
FOUNDED IN 2008, we have many field trips and casual get-togethers just to socialize with other critical thinkers as well, and of course our great pot-luck summer and winter solstice parties.
Our goal: To support the agnostic/athiest/skeptic/humanist community with local meetings, potluck parties, and other social events. To spread the word that scientific skeptics and non-believers that promote secular values and the separation of church and state. We cherish humanistic values over any supernatural superstitions and encourage others to look at their worldview with critical thinking skills.
I hope you join our group and enjoy the conversations we have!

·OnlineOnlineOn Saturday, March 14, 2026, at 3:00 PM PST/6:00 PM EST, the Freethought Society (FS) and the Humanist Society of Santa Barbara (HSSB) will sponsor presenter Charlie Painter. His Zoom speech is entitled “What the heck is Objectivism?” The link to view this Zoom is:

With a well-designed PowerPoint slide show, Painter will outline how philosophy moves the world and why a rational philosophy like those of the Founders, is necessary to preserve liberty and freedom in the 21st century.
Ayn Rand’s philosophy of Objectivism provides the rational basis Painter will highlight and how Objectivism pertains to all five branches of philosophy: meta-physics, ethics, politics, episte-mology, and aesthetics. There will be time for a question and answer segment.
Painter is an award-winning guitarist, band leader, and teacher in Madison, Wisconsin since 2007. Since 2019 Charlie developed a deep passion towards rational, liberty minded philosophy which motivated him to organize a local Meetup group in 2021. The success of this group has led to Painter becoming a return guest on Youtube podcasts and a featured presenter in other local Meetup events. Painter adheres to reason as our most important guide to knowledge and agrees with Rand that “anyone who fights for the future, lives in it today.”
