Climb for Charity - the Calgary Tower! DSN Year 3!

Details

500 feet. 802 steps. Climb For Wilderness - for Earth Day!

Climb and Run for Wilderness is Alberta Wilderness Association's annual Earth Day event at the Calgary Tower. This event provides you the unique opportunity to climb the 802 stairs inside the Calgary Tower. The day is filled with entertainment, including an outstanding Wild Alberta Expo where you can learn more about Alberta's wilderness, wildlife and wild waters. You will have a terrific time and be eligible for outstanding prizes.

DSN did this first in 2010 (LINK HERE) (https://www.meetup.com/CalgaryDoSomethingNew/events/12697121/), and although it was a bit of a physical challenge for a couple of us, Alexander showed us up by doing 6 or 7 climbs!!

We repeated with a larger crowd in 2011 - so let's get even more out in 2012!!

http://photos2.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/9/8/a/e/event_22719086.jpegSaturday, April 21, 2012 - 9:30am - REGISTER ONLINE if you haven't already - and meet & greet other DSNers!!

Registration opens earlier, at 8:30 if you want to start early; one can sign up/pay at the base of the Tower or register online & skip the lineup - LINK HERE (http://www.climbforwilderness.ca/registration.asp)!.
Last climb's start time is 1:30pm.

So - 9:30-10:00 we will meet around the registration desk area - look for my t-shirt & Stetson as in the photo!

10:00am - LET'S GO!!

Let's rock 'n roll!!! ...and climb, sweat and cry "why didn't I actually USE the stairclimber at the gym ?!?"

I've climbed the CN Tower's 1,776 steps (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CN_Tower) once before (in my youth!), in about 13:20 - I can't even HOPE to match that time again, even with fewer than half the steps (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calgary_Tower), but I'm willing to do it, for charity (http://www.climbforwilderness.ca/faq.shtml), and for the UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY (OK, it's available every year...) to see the Tower from within its bowels (OK, that doesn't actually sound so good, but you know what I mean...)

Your $30 registration fee is good for one climb. It's $30 each time you climb, to $100.
At that $100 mark, you are able to repeat the climb as often as you want... er... as you CAN!

Sponsorship forms & info are available on the website.

I suggest we all go in for 9:30 to be finished registering by 10:00, and have a little time for stretching/warmup/socializing.

I will be wearing a black MEETUP t-shirt (red Meetup logo on the front, my nickname David R, on the back) and my white Stetson.
I will be looking around for you; but if your photo isn't on the Meetup site, it'll be easier for YOU to find ME!

If you have someone who wants to just cheer you/us on, access to the public Tower is the same as every day - $14.75+GST for adults.
This $30 fee is just to climb the stairs.

If I am feeling VERY good that morning, I will have it in me to try a second climb - but realistically, I will only do one.
Anyone who can/wants to do more; we'll sort-of-try to meet up through the morning.
Keep an eye out for my black shirt/white Stetson & say Hi !!

What we did last year: Most of us did just the one climb.
After some rest time up top, we went out for lunch.

With a LOT more people signing up for this year in DSN, there will be a LOT more climbing abilities, from the slow one-timers, to the all-day runners...

Even on the day, it will be difficult to connect with everyone. So there's NO way to align everyone's time together, that's just a fact!

I hope that most of us can at least do one climb as a sort-of-group; then those who want to continue can break off & move on, but those of us who are "done-after-one!" can take a breather, then go off to have some lunch.

Some of us may not be well-timed to meet with the group - sometimes we can have a Meetup, without ever Meeting up!! So I won't charge the DSN $1 fee.

That's why 9:30-10:00 at the desk is an important time - so we CAN say hi, and socialize a little; or call me during that time to let me know what's up! I'll email my phone out to all, a few days before the event.
