Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD) 2013

About Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD)

Thursday 9 May is Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD), a day dedicated to increasing understanding and stimulating discussion about digital accessibility and inclusion.

Inspired by a blog post from Joe Devon that accessibility know-how needs to go mainstream with developers now, Global Accessibility Awareness Day has been embraced around the world with events and activities all planned for 9 May.

About the Canberra GAAD event

The Canberra web accessibility community is hosting an evening of accessibility lightning talks and a general catch up.

We have an AMAZING line-up of speakers with accessibility stories to share. These folks are passionate about what they will be sharing with us and will introduce us to new ways of thinking about inclusion and technology.

So come hang out with us on 9 May, for an educational, casual evening where we learn and talk and grow.

Our presenters:

  • Enabling Environments - Huy Nguyen
  • A web video experience that doesn't suck - Christopher Giffard
  • Accessibility report structure - Danny Thomas
  • Testing with people with disabilities - Rhiannon Thomas
  • Mobile accessibility - Jake MacMullin
  • Accessible presentations - Andrew Arch

Got an idea for a talk? Please get in touch with Ruth or Andrew or post to this meetup group with your talk idea.

This event is for everyone: designers, developers, business analysts, business folks, Occupational Health & Safety people, disability policy folks and anyone interested in accessibility.

There will be some nibbles provided thanks to our supporters. Drinks will be available for purchase at the bar.

I would love to see someone speak about their accessibility and mobile experiences.

I'd like to suggest as a topic "how to encourage assistive technology users to provide feedback"

I haven't much experience with this myself, and my organisation cannot pay for this assistance, so any pointers others could provide would be welcome
