Cook and Serve breakfast for women and children at homeless shelter on Easter

This is the first of 3 shifts available to help cook and serve BREAKFAST on Easter Sunday for women and children at the San Jose Obrero Mission homeless shelter in the Little Village neighborhood. This will be a special Easter day community service. You can wear your bunny ears!

Volunteers will prepare and cook a delicious home made meal and then serve it to 45 guests staying at the shelter, comprised mostly of women and children. We will then help clean up and sanitize the kitchen, tables and dining area.  (mopping, sweeping, dish washing)

Breakfast Menu:

French Toast

Location: 2408 S Albany Ave Chicago, IL 60623
Breakfast Shift: 8:00 A.M. to 10:00 A.M

Event is near Kedzie and 26th Street bus routes, and free street and lot parking available

San Jose Obrero Mission is a haven for women and children or men in crisis as they strive to secure permanent housing and improve their lives for the long-term. Their individualized approach equips clients with the tools needed to gain lasting independence. By providing safe, interim housing, vocational training and job placement assistance, life skills training and basic nutritional, clothing, medical and hygienic support, SJOM gives its clients the tools to stay off the streets for good. Participants are empowered to take charge of their lives, gain permanent housing and gain lasting independence.

ATTENTION: This is a very busy event and there will be no kitchen staff on that day. This is a completely volunteer supported event. We really depends on ALL volunteers to show up if they RSVP.  Please only RSVP if you are serious about your commitment date and time.  I understand that personal emergencies can come up.  If you have an unexpected change in your schedule, and need to cancel, please change your RSVP status to NO as soon as possible,  so your spot can be free up and give other volunteers enough time to plan their schedule and sign up. Don't wait until the last minute to cancel as that will hurt the project by leaving it short handed. Thank you.

Ok, I rsvp to serve breakfast and lunch. I didn't know there would be so many others that wanted to also. So, I can cancel breakfast, and allow two others to volunteer, and just do the lunch. If there are two people on the waiting list, that would like to volunteer for breakfast, just let me know.....if no takers, I will be there for both....I want cancel my rsvp, unless I know, someone wants to come.

Hi Everybody, Thanks for adding yourself to the waiting list. I really appreciate you all wanting to help the moms and children at the shelter. Due to the limited kitchen space, we have to set a strict limit on how many volunteers can participate for safety reasons. Unless one of the confirmed volunteers cancel or remove themselves between now and Sunday, we do not have any more space for people on the waiting list this week. But I will make this opportunity again in the near future, so you will get another chance to participate and help. Please keep checking the Meetup group for new postings on this shelter. I hope you all have a very Happy Easter.

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
