It’s not all the time that a genre throwback lives up to its influences, but KNIFE + HEART passes with flying neon colors. As gay porn director and pathetic lesbian screw-up Anne Parèze (Vanessa Paradis) begins to work on her next project, a leather-masked killer hunts her friends and collaborators one by one. Vanessa sets down a long trail of blood, sweat, and other body fluids, investigating the murders while shooting films and navigating her own unrequited passions.

Searing off the screen thanks to deft cinematography and a pulsing score from M83, KNIFE + HEART is a neo-giallo with substance to back up the style – an ecstatically queer thriller that explores community, desire, and the ways real-life trauma informs artistic output. At the end of the day, all we have is each other – so why not make a movie and have a little fun?

Wes Craven goes 2 for 2 in just under a year with his sequel to his mega-comeback hit SCREAM. At first glance, his follow-up appears to have less of its predecessor's meta-commentary (save for a few lines of dialogue) but his sequel actually finds itself firmly within the framework of the 80's set "college campus slasher" craze, and takes subtler steps to poke fun at it. All one need do is hold this up to films like URBAN LEGEND to see just how clever Craven sidesteps the obvious pitfalls. Nevertheless, Sidney, Gale, Dewey, and Randy are back and help round out the never-ending appeal of the original four Craven-directed films - there's a reason why they remain top of their class.
