Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s spellbinding international breakthrough, Cure (1997) not only cemented him as a trailblazer of the new wave in Japanese horror but also propelled the genre into uncharted realms of philosophical and existential inquiry.
In Cure, a series of shocking and seemingly unmotivated murders—each committed by a different individual yet marked by the same grisly signature—leads Detective Kenichi Takabe (Koji Yakusho) into a convoluted investigation. His quest to uncover the connection between these chilling acts pulls him into a disturbing game of cat and mouse with an enigmatic amnesiac (Masato Hagiwara), who may embody pure evil.
Bathed in a mood of hushed, hypnotic dread, Cure is a tour de force of psychological tension. This hallucinatory journey delves deep into the darkest recesses of the human mind, offering a compelling exploration of fear and identity that is sure to resonate with fans of the genre.
Join us for this unforgettable cinematic experience as part of our COLD SWEAT series and immerse yourself in Kurosawa’s masterful blend of horror and existential dread.
Hideo Nakata’s J-Horror blockbuster, Ringu (1998), redefined the genre with its phantasmic elegance and sparked a wave of nightmares, rip-offs, and remakes.
In Ringu, television journalist Reiko investigates an urban legend surrounding a cursed VHS tape that claims the lives of its viewers exactly seven days after they watch it. As the chilling mystery draws perilously close to her own life, Reiko teams up with her ex-husband—now an exorcist, Takashi—to break the curse and hopefully survive a terrifying encounter with the ghostly Sadako.
Directed by Hideo Nakata (Dark Water), Ringu stands as the highest-grossing Japanese horror film of all time, and it continues to terrify audiences with its nerve-shredding intensity.Screening in Japanese with English subtitles.
