ChicagoRuby: Elmhurst - How Do I Build... ?

The "How Do I Build...?" format is somewhere between a hack night and a presentation.

The key question: "How do I build [X] in Ruby or Rails?" We might talk about the best shopping cart or calendar or whatever for Rails. We might talk about the best way to do database maintenance with Ruby, or the best tools for organizing Ruby or Rails development.

Every ChicagoRuby member is invited to drive. Let the group know what you want to do, what you've tried, and what would be interesting to you. Let's put our heads together and create!

Lunch After the Meeting
After most meetings, we go to lunch at the Elmhurst Restaurant, roughly two blocks NW of the meeting venue. Address: 441 West Lake Street, Elmhurst, IL 60126. Join us!

Not only will this meeting be the Swan song for Tracie and me, but I have a question that I hope somebody can help me with:

I have an inherited app with several components and configurations. All are within the same Rails app, and things work fine, but...
In production mode we have (for good reason!) class caching enabled.
That has an unintended side effect of creating a single point of failure on a server that isn't even needed for production because -- hit it, boys --- class caching sets application-wide eager loading on, meaning all models get loaded up and hence all database connections get established.

Have an of you smart folk learned something that will help a poor dumb country boy like me get past this problem?

Hint: I would prefer something other than ripping out the unwanted models during deployment, but may end up there.

Tentative 'yes'; I have to see if I can clear my other plans in time to go.
