ChicagoRuby: Downtown - GeneXus Demo

Developer/instructor Daniel Coellar will demonstrate GeneXus, an IDE for Ruby and other languages, by building a small invoicing application from scratch in Ruby. He will also show how the product uses patterns to audit any table at the field level without changing or having access to the original source. The demo will be followed by a discussion with Rick Zachmann, a developer who has used the product to solve real-world business problems.
PowerPoint/Keynote slides will be banned for the evening unless required during Q&A.

Justin LoveAssistant OrganizerThoughtworks supplied pizza as usually, and even cookies this time. While 'IDE' literally describes Genexsus, it was not in the sense people expected. The presenters also didn't make any particular point of correcting this misunderstandi
ng and it took a little while for people to understand what they were looking at. It may have been relevant in the sense that people doing rails may include people doing data entry applications, but the application was basically irrelevant to the Ruby language.

Ginny HendryAssistant OrganizerWe were probably not the best audience for this since most of us are hard-core Ruby programmers so we wouldn't want to have a code generator writing our code for us! I found it interesting, though, since Genexus is similar in some ways to products I have worked with. Applying their code generation approach to Ruby says that they consider Ruby to be a mainstream commercial language now.

Dave GiuntaThis speaker really shouldn't have been booked for a Chicago Ruby meeting. Genexus is a tool that's obviously made to avoid writing code. It's not an IDE for a developer, but rather a button pusher who would rather not be bothered with all the decisions and work that goes into making truly excellent software. The kicker was when the two users the vendor brought in to testify to the product's awesomeness basically haven't written a line of Ruby code ever, and expressed how much they hate coding.

Michael NortonThis demo was pretty well done, although I thought it went on a bit long. They wanted to show detail, but I think most of the audience grokked the concept in the first 10 minutes and the wow factor wore off soon after that. This was a rough audience for a product like this, but I thought the reception was good and the questions were poignant. Overall, a good presentation. Not one I would have elected to attend had I known a bit more about the product.

The product is interesting, but as Dave pointed out it didn't fit here. The presenters clearly are out of touch with Ruby culture. I'm glad that everyone was cordial to them, despite the fact that they seem to think Ruby is just another language, and one which we should want to avoid working with.
