ChicagoRuby: Elmhurst - How Do I Build... ?

The "How Do I Build...?" format is somewhere between a hack night and a presentation.

The key question: "How do I build [X] in Ruby or Rails?" We might talk about the best shopping cart or calendar or whatever for Rails. We might talk about the best way to do database maintenance with Ruby, or the best tools for organizing Ruby or Rails development.

Every ChicagoRuby member is invited to drive. Let the group know what you want to do, what you've tried, and what would be interesting to you. Let's put our heads together and create!

Lunch After the Meeting
After most meetings, we go to lunch at the Elmhurst Restaurant, roughly two blocks NW of the meeting venue. Address: 441 West Lake Street, Elmhurst, IL 60126. Join us!

Great. After introductions, we talked about the upcoming Ruby WorldsConf which is being held April 22 to 25th here in Chicago. Jon Allured gave an excellent demo on Gosu (https://github.com/jlnr/gosu), a Ruby library for making games. It is a basic framework for creating 2D basic games in Ruby. The fun of it was checking out how Jon implemented the clicks, rectangle borders, status changes etc. Then at my request, Jon went over his blog article "Setting Up a New Rails Application". I was suprised that Heroku has fallen a bit from A+ to B+ because of some scaling issues. A great learning demo, especially for new programmers.
Stu Gerstein gave examples on how to use the least amount of if statements in the classic fizzbuzz. Interesting and thought provoking ways of doing fizzbuzz. More conversation about Node Javascript, interfaces etc. Then we went the the Elhmhurst restaurant for more geek talk.

I've been playing around with Gosu (https://github.com/jlnr/gosu), a Ruby library for making games and would love to share what I've learned. Any interest?

I <3 games! Worked professionally in the 90's on games with langs slower than ruby. Really wouldn't mind revisiting the fun in programming!!!!

I would definitely be interested in learning this.

I'll have a five..ten minute talk and code examples on unconditionally removing the if/when/unless (early ruby hacker challenge from last year's ChicagoRuby). Just an exploration on style and abstraction without the side effect of syntax =)

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
