ChicagoRuby: Downtown - Augmented Ruby: The Rubinius Language Platform

Details

Ruby is a powerful, expressive, and beautiful programming language. But like all programming languages, Ruby makes tradeoffs between the features it supports and those it does not. As a consequence, some people find other programming languages more suitable for a particular problem. However, switching languages is potentially costly and usually requires learning entirely different tool chains.

What if we could keep Ruby and only use a different language where it is most needed for specific parts of an application?

This talk will introduce Rubinius and focus on features of the platform that make it simple to implement other programming languages. After the presentation, be sure to participate in the Rubinius Hack Night on March 12th (https://www.meetup.com/ChicagoRuby/events/149038342/).

About the Presenter
Brian Shirai is the maintainer of Rubinius and creator of RubySpec. He recently relocated to Chicago to join Enova and has been enjoying the beautiful Chicago sunrises on clear days. He's looking forward to clear days that don't include -26ºF wind chill.

WindyCityRails: Sept 4-5, 2014
WindyCityRails (http://windycityrails.org/) has a great new venue in Chicago's west loop. Save $200 with super early bird pricing. Only 100 super early bird tickets will be sold.http://windycityrails.org (http://windycityrails.org/)

After most downtown meetings we head over to Elephant & Castle (185 N. Wabash) for refreshments & fellowship. Join us for a few minutes if you have time.

Please use your real name when you RSVP for downtown ChicagoRuby meetings. Reason: We are required to give a list of all attendees to the security desk prior to the meeting. If the name on your ID doesn't the match the name on the RSVP list, then Aon security (http://www.cuberick.com/2008/12/history-of-security-at-aon-center.html) will not let you in the building. Sorry for the inconvenience, but those are the rules of the Aon Building.
