ChicagoRuby: Elmhurst - Lambdas, Procs, and Blocks, Oh My

This location is shown only to members

Lambda and related features pervade Ruby and form the foundation of many awesome hacks. Yet, for those who didn't cut their teeth on Lisp or Haskell, the concepts may seem bizarre.

Justin Love will go over the many ways to access lambdas, as well as procs and blocks, what that means, and why you might want to use these features (collectively, 'closures') For dessert, there will be a review of some common tricks that put closures to work.

Note the 10:30am start time. We're experimenting with the 10:30am slot once again. Members who attended our first 10:30am meeting enjoyed the new time, and we might make the change permanent. Feedback welcome and encouraged.

Good job by Justin. May have been hard to follow for nubies but he provided all his code so it will be easy to work out any obscure points later. His example of the method returning two procs was the best illustration of closure I've seen.

I like the earlier start time.

Justin put a tremendous amount of work into this preparation and it showed in a big & positive way. He took a very complex topic, compressed it, and presented it clearly. Justin also handles questions very well. I look forward to seeing more talks like this.

Nice to see a bigger turnout. I got some good feedback on my talk, and saw the beginning of more goodness coming in the future.

I thought it was really valuable for the speaker's slides to be online. I also thought the speaker showed a mastery of the subject, although I'm not sure he had mastered teaching the subject or if the subject over my head.

All though the topic was well beyond my technical expertise as a Noob the presentation was crisp and professional. If nothing else it presented me with some information I will need to research. A nice feature of the presentations was several references to topics and URL's that Justin used himself on preparation of the topic allowing me to access and digest the material at a later point in time. Also, the fact that Justin has graciously shared his presentation material online will allow me the opportunity to re-engage this topic at a later time when my technical skills are up-to it. On a general note. This was my first meeting and everyone was friendly and wiling to share information. Just a suggestion: I know there were at least one or two other Ruby and/or Rails Noobs present. It might be nice if some small portion of the meeting could be used to accommodate questions to the group possible at the end where either a group discusion or one on one could happen.
