Come on out and hack!
Join your fellow Rubyists for a night of conversation, hacking, and (if folks want to chip in) pizza. Our first Hack Night will be held at the Illinois Technology Association (ITA) just a few blocks from Union Station. Commuters will find it easy to stop by on the way home from work.
Bring your laptop. We'll be hacking on MongoDB and its Ruby driver so please try to install them before you get there. It's simple to do and takes about 15 minutes. See the instructions below.
Ginny Hendry will lead us through an unstructured & informal agenda. Rubyists of all skill levels are welcome. If you're a beginner we'll pair you with a more experienced Rubyist. Thanks also to Chirag Patel, Daniel Peters, Joe Sak, and Sean Corbett for putting hack nights on the ChicagoRuby menu.
RSVP at least 24 hours in Advance
Please be sure to RSVP with your FULL NAME so that the security team has your name on the admission list. The name on your RSVP must match your ID - just like airport security. See you then!
Installing MongoDB for Ruby:
Go to http://www.mongodb.or.... Choose QuickStart and follow directions for your operating system.
Get the Ruby gem. (Note that on some operating systems the following commands must be preceded by sudo )
gem install gemcutter
gem tumble # may not be necessary but go ahead
(If it says your rubygems is out of date, see http://gemcutter.org/... on how to update.)
gem install mongo
Next step is optional and beginners may want to skip it if they're not sure they're set up to compile C extensions. It makes Mongo run faster from Ruby.
gem install mongo_ext
If you want to play, mongodb.org has a Ruby Tutorial.
Hey Joe- That's a great idea! Anything we can do to promote both formal and informal gatherings of Rubyists will strengthen our community. Thanks for putting the word out. -Ray
Are you going every Saturday? Or is there an email list confirming particular Saturdays? I'm out of town this weekend but would like to try attending going forward. I haven't done a single thing with Ruby / RoR yet, other than a few failed install attempts, so I won't have much to contribute initially :)
Joe- I suggest you get the ball rolling for a Saturday morning group with a specific date and time and see how the first one goes. Also if you are coming to the meetups today or next week you can mention your first scheduled date there to make sure people hear about it.
We have already started and it's every Saturday. We are thinking about changing the location because parking in Lakeview is awful. But I LOVE Noble Tree :(
Chris Sepic suggested Starbucks up at Berwyn & Clark (we all live up north).
I'd like to support a locally owned business, however. Tomorrow we will meet at Noble Tree in Lakeview again. Show up around "10ish".
Again... there is no agenda. It is not a "meeting". It is just a time to encourage, motivate, ask and answer questions.
@David -- please feel free to attend! The original point of this meetup was to help my friend learn front-end (because I am a 12 year vet of that skill). Now I have *just* enough Ruby/RoR knowledge to help a beginner. So please come!
Log in to Meetup with your Facebook account.
For anyone interested, I'm also trying to get a small group started on Saturday mornings at Noble Tree Coffee in Lakeview. We're rubyists but we also have a focus on front-end.
The point is to come in, get some work or side-work done, motivate each other, hang out, ask questions, answer questions, study, learn from tutorials and each other, etc. It's very informal and there is no agenda.
