ChicagoRuby: Downtown - Data Visualization

Data Visualization: As it becomes easier and easier for companies to collect huge amounts of information, people are realizing that they are sitting on terabytes of data whose insights they haven't explored. Data visualization allows us to detect patterns and relationships in data that would otherwise remain hidden. It brings out the human element in vast seas of numbers and exposes stunning narratives that might otherwise stay untold. Data visualization alone can make millions of numbers understandable in a single glance. But making effective visualizations involves more than just plopping some numbers into a charting tool. There are concrete goals to consider before typing a single line of code. This presentation will cover goals, examples, resources, and tools so that next time you're curious about what's in the data, you'll know how to find out.

Presenter Vanessa Shen is a data visualization designer/developer based in Chicago. Her first chart was drawn in a childhood diary one Halloween night - a bar chart depicting how many of each type of candy she collected - and she's been obsessed with revealing patterns and relationships hidden in data ever since. She is thrilled that making charts is a real job.

WindyCityRails
happens September 12-13, 2013. Check out the amazing presenters, and register before August 7th to save $100. http://windycityrails.org.

After most downtown meetings we head over to Elephant & Castle (185 N. Wabash) for refreshments & fellowship. Join us for a few minutes if you have time.

Please use your real name when you RSVP for downtown ChicagoRuby meetings. Reason: We are required to give a list of all attendees to the security desk prior to the meeting. If the name on your ID doesn't the match the name on the RSVP list, then Aon security will not let you in the building. Sorry for the inconvenience, but those are the rules of the Aon Building.

Thanks to everyone who came! I'm so sorry I forgot to post the slides; it slipped my mind. They're here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/odiijvoy6gze1zp/Vanessa_Shen_Data_Visualization.pdf

Excellent coverage of the subject from Vanessa Shen. In addition to sources she gave.... Nathan Yau has two books of interest. Visualize This emphasizes story telling. Data Points addresses process. Those interested in R may find Manning's R in Action helpful. Check d3-based libraries Rickshaw and dimple. The Timely Portfolio (http://timelyportfolio.blogspot.com) is a good complement to blogs Vanessa mentioned.
