Philly EdTech Hackathon

On the weekend of May 2-4, 2014 we’re teaming up with the Science Leadership Academy, a Philadelphia public high school, to hold an on-location hackathon dedicated to education. We will bring together developers, teachers and students to work together on applications and projects that are immediately useful and applicable in schools. If you don’t have a technical background, there are lots of other ways you can contribute. Every project needs designers, marketers, writers and testers as well, so come one, come all.

Staff and students from around the district are invited to participate with ideas and a passion for improving their school. Your direct insight into the inner workings of the school environment is one of our greatest resources. The best projects will be built by teams that combine development skill with perspective from the classroom. Projects that integrate with Slate or Google Apps could even be put to immediate real-world use at SLA.

FRIDAY, MAY 2ND

@Impact Hub, 3rd Floor, 1227 N 4th St

7 - 9pm - Pre-Hack Party and Brainstorming Session Come enjoy food, beer and wine, meet other hackathon participants and begin to form your teams. At this pre-hack party, participants will brainstorm ideas for apps and systems and hear ideas from students, teachers and school administrators. Project proposals will be presented to the crowd to build interest and recruit teams.

Note: Starting at 6pm, Impact Hub is hosting an art opening on the first and second floors. They invited us to attend. More free food and drinks!

SATURDAY, MAY 3RD

@Science Leadership Academy, 22nd and Arch St

9am - 10am - Coffee and Breakfast, Opening Remarks and SLATE tour SLA sysadmin and SLATE lead-developer Chris Alfano demonstrates how you can spawn your own copy of SLATE and use its API.

12pm - 11:30pm - Let the Hacking Begin! Developers and designers get to work concepting or building a working prototype of their app, hopefully joined by an educator or student who can guide and validate their designs.

SUNDAY, MAY 4TH

@Science Leadership Academy, 22nd and Arch St

9am - 2pm - Finish hacking and prepare demos Teams conclude work on their concept or prototype and prepare to present it.

2pm - 4pm - Demos, awards and closing remarks Teams present their work, judges deliberate, and prizes/honors are announced.
