Maryland Fly-in

It's time for another Maryland fly-in! Come show off your latest design or learn from others if you don't have your own drone. All experience levels are welcome, and families are encouraged to attend.

The flying field is not actually at the school, but in a large open space on the opposite side of Holter Rd from the school. Check out the following link to see the exact location: http://goo.gl/maps/Nn8GP

Carefree attitude was good for networking and interaction. My perhaps overly critical opinion of the flying arrangements were they could use polish- too many 5.8Ghz devices at use at once (DJI Visions and fpv don't play well together) and too narrow, and limited flight path considering the area- while the organizers had little control over the broader area around the immediate flight/launch/base, it was very teasing to not be able to utilize the vast potential. A family or general get together maybe should have had some fun flying events/activities/games so it could become more kid friendly and family friendly. Better pilot instruction, and perhaps a slightly heavier hand on enforcement could have helped with better opportunity for more variety and levels of skill and style (requiring vastly more usable space of course)
Overall, as an ex event planner and organizer, I have to say the most important factor was in abundance- good will, and that accounts for everything in the end.

You can't filter out a harmonic. It's there as long as your transmitter is transmitting and there is no making it go away. It is luck that your chosen 1.2 frequency and therefore the respective 2.4 harmonic happens to be offset enough from your 2.4 receiver that it isn't having a detrimental effect on you. But I can assure you that you are flying around with a 2.4ghz harmonic that might catch up to your or someone else one of these days. Especially if you change 1.2 frequencies. Keep an eye on it!

Your right. The harmonic is there, but it down in the noise floor and is not an issue. Btw - There are only 2 legal frequencies to use. 1280 and 1258mhz and it is more commonly referred to as 1.3ghz

Same thing here in my neighborhood. My neighbors all think it's the coolest thing. I think they see that this giant loud colorful thing is not going to be spying on anyone. I also don't use the word drone when speaking with my neighbors about it since it sometimes gives the wrong impression. It's my "helicopter with 4 blades".

A quick video of the 2nd test flight of the Phantom with retractable landing gear and 3 axis Arris CM3000 gimbal. Final tweaks being done. fine tuning pitch and roll p-mixes, and adjusting for headlock and yaw follow modes via switch.
Maybe next time the group gets up this way I can show her off proper with all the bells and whistles. She takes the most beautiful footage without legs in view...ever:

Two videos from Saturdays flights. In the first one you will see a near disaster! I took off even though I was getting interference in my goggles from the 5.8ghz video signal, someone nearby was flying a DJI Phantom Vision which uses the 5.8ghz band for control.

What I didn't know was that I would lose the video signal only 300 feet away. The video in my goggles was worse that what got recorded. I quickly flipped the switch for return to home, took my Fat Sharks off, circled for a couple of minutes over the field flying line of sight, and brought it in for a gentle crosswind landing.

The next video was after the Phantom Vision had landed. The amp draw is not accurate because I didn't have the correct current sensor selected in RVOSD.

AMAZING !!!. Perfect location. As always, thank you Tim for giving so much of your personal time to put these fly-in's together and for bridging us all together.

Wonderful afternoon- far more variety and interesting flying machines. (I was a little disappointed- thought "drones" was a little more dynamic a term than flying devices- it's all good though)
Awesome folks- I had as much fun as you can with a radio... and with your clothes on.

Thanks to those that organized. It was worth the trip from NoVa! Great time and more knowledge.

Enroute from Germantown! I think I have revived my drone post goose incident.

    April 19, 2014

  • Matt

Well, HAL may not make it to the Fly-In today. I had a little incident with a very angry goose. HAL was shot down over the edge of my lake and went down in the swampy shore next to their nest. Assessing damage and making repairs. We'll see what happens.

Me and HAL should be there as long as I don't get too roped into yard work gone awry.

Hey I'm looking to sit down and discuss some topics with people who have a back ground in robotics programing and building drones..maybe we could hit up a field some where in the nova area and do some flying:-)

Tim what airport would your meeting be if not Middletown? I fly out of Frederick but the Frederick News Mention Davis. I might get a kitchen pass to see the Drones in action April 19th.

Juan, We couldn't get the airport this time so we are flying out of an open field. The field is not actually at the school, but in a large open space on the opposite side of Holter Rd from the school.

      April 13, 2014

  • Tom M.

At the school? or at the usual field?

    March 19, 2014

    • Tom M.

Is the location final (middletown field)? or is it switching to the airport?

      April 12, 2014

We are going to use the Middleton Field. For those of you who haven't been there before the field is not actually at the school, but in a large open space on the opposite side of Holter Rd from the school.

Selling My DJI Phantom 2 VISION. Flown 3 times for a total of 30 minutes. Hard Aluminum case, fitted with the Lens Filter Kit and includes a UV/Haze Filter and Tiffen Polarizing Filter.
It is a jewel and am selling because my wife is buying me Canon 5D MKIII, and I'll need to build something to lift it.

I just stumbled across this group- and here is a meetup only a couple miles from my home!
I was beginning to feel like the only person out here in this area who flew multi rotors... and perhaps that is true. Hoping they will be welcome at this event.
