Data Driven Women 0.7: Unleashing Human Potential with Data

What is possible when data is given purpose? The common story around "big data" concerns enormous data sets so large traditional data processing applications fail. That story missed the two most crucial qualities: creating meaning and creating impact. It is easy to turn copious amounts of data into more data, or to answer one-off questions.

Join us Wednesday March 26, 2014 for our next Data Driven Women event featuring Dr. Vivienne Ming. In this talk, we will discuss one purpose, maximizing human potential, in four distinct domains: health technology, neuroprosthetics, educational technology, and talent management. Solving problems in these domains requires much more than simply running Hadoop queries. We will see how sophisticated, large-scale machine learning applied with purpose can fundamentally improve a life.

About our Speaker

Dr. Vivienne Ming, named one of 10 Women to Watch in Tech in 2013 by Inc. Magazine, is a theoretical neuroscientist, technologist and entrepreneur. She is chief scientist at Gild, an innovative startup that applies machine learning to predict optimal candidates for technology jobs, and to bring meritocracy to job markets. Dr. Ming also co-founded her own cutting-edge edtech startup, Socos, with her wife, Norma. She is a visiting scholar at UC Berkeley's Redwood Center for Theoretical Neuroscience pursuing her research in neuroprosthetics. In her free time, Dr. Ming also explores augmented cognition using technology like Google Glass and has been developing a predictive model of diabetes to better manage her son's blood glucose levels. She sits on the boards of StartOut and Our Family Coalition and speaks on issues of LGBT inclusion and gender in technology. Her work and research has received extensive media attention including the New York Times, NPR, Nature, O Magazine, Forbes, and The Atlantic.

Data Driven Women is a networking series and speaker event that brings together women (& men) passionate about building a stronger female tech community. Our name doesn't come from a desire to discuss only data, but rather from a data driven approach that allows us to bring metrics and measurement to different topics like: innovation, entrepreneurship and technology.
