Creating the Next Generation of Techies

Hey, DC, we have a problem! There are simply too many excellent meetup groups to attend each month. Let's get together and have a joint meetup that brings together the best groups focused on sysadmins, operations, and developers. All are welcome!

Ops School is an open-source, community-driven project that was recently launched. Ops School aims to create a complete syllabus for training smart persons with high potential who already have a basic understanding of Linux or other UNIX variant, to become strong junior systems administrators. Avleen Vig and Patrick McDonnell, engineers at Etsy and leaders in the Ops School project, will be in town to share their thoughts and experience on how we create the next generation of system administrators.

Theo Schlossnagle is a serial entrepreneur and founder and CEO of OmniTI, Circonus, and more. Theo has written and given presentations on career development in the operations world and will join us to share some thoughts on how you can level-up your career.

  • 6:30 - 7:00 - Meet, greet & eat
  • 7:00 - 7:15 - Welcome and Announcements
  • 7:20 - 8:00 - Ops School & Training Sysadmins - Avleen & Patrick
  • 8:10 - 8:50 - Career Development - Theo Schlossnagle
  • 9:00 - 9:30 - Additional networking, socializing, etc.

Theo's talk was really amazing! It's changed my thinking and has motivated me to learn about the other areas of my company.

We should do that again. Having the different groups come together under one roof was great!

I was thinking the same thing last night. This is where mini-conferences come from.

If venue is within University precinct and invitation to all IT & non IT students with logo 'Career planning as System Admin', response would be overwhelming.

This meetup is now available on YouTube as three separate videos. But, before we get to that, please take a few minutes to complete this survey about tech meetups in DC and how we can make them more awesome:

I've just met with the team over at Sapient who will be hosting this meeting. This is a great location for our meetup. A couple of quick updates: The room can accomodate a few more than what we originally limited the RSVPs to. As such, I've bumped up the limit. Please let you friends and colleagues know so they can join us before we reach capacity. There is parking on the street and in the building. However, the parking garage in the building is CASH only and closes promptly at 10PM. Looking forward to a great meetup!

We've found a location for this event! It will be held at Sapient's offices in Arlington. This location is right by the Courthouse Metro stop.

Looking forward to seeing you all there!
