Topic 191 - Health Care
Talking Points
1. What worries, if any, do you have about the health care system in Australia?
2. Dental care is not covered by Medicare in Australia. Why do you think this is the case?
3. Medical error is the 3rd leading cause of death in Australia (and USA). Why do you think that is the case?
4. 'Telehealth' is new in Australia. It is video & phone consultation provided by doctors. It is covered by Medicare. When might you use telehealth, and when might you need to actually visit a doctor?
5. What are some advantages and disadvantages of using the Internet (Google, Youtube etc) for medical advice?
6. What do you see as the main risks to your personal health? How do you try to protect yourself from health risks?
7. USA spends more per person on health care than any other country. However public health in USA is rather poor and people are living LESS long. What is the reason for this contradiction?
8. Public surveys always show that doctors are the most trusted profession. Is this trust justified? Why do people trust doctors?
9. About 80% of Australians live in cities, close to doctors & hospitals. However other Australians live in very remote areas. How do people in remote areas get medical help?
10. "Medical tourism" is now quite popular. For example I (Thor) once flew to India for a dental implant. In Australia it would have cost $5000. In India it cost $1200 including the air fare. What do you see as some risks and benefits of medical tourism? Would you consider it yourself?
