Topic 190 - How Safe Do You Need To Be?
Talking Points
1. Is there any place in Adelaide where you feel unsafe? Why or why not?
2. What kinds of food do you think are safe or unsafe? Why? How much does this influence your diet?
3. How much money do you think you will need to retire safely in Australia? Explain your thinking.
4. How and why do women need to think differently from men about safety (do they ..) ?
5. Many parents now track their children electronically ( ,, and some men even track their wives). What are the upsides and downsides of this?
6. What is a balance between privacy and safety? Digital electronics has turned our world upside down. Now your movements and even your speech in any public place can be followed by police and others. Does this ever make you LESS safe?
7. Some jobs are extremely secure. (e.g. many government jobs). In Australia it is harder by law to fire someone than in many other countries. This personal job safety makes people more content. It also has some disadvantages. What are the disadvantages?
8. In USA the largest number of small business failures (bankruptcies) are caused by illness of the owner. In Australia most small businesses do not fail because of illness. Australia has universal 'free' health care. How do you think that Australia's health safety net changes the behaviour and decisions of ordinary people?
9. the Australian government (and other governments) have a "safety advisory" on their website for every country in the world. When you visit another country, what are some safety questions you ask yourself? What are some countries you tinnk are less safe or more safe? Why?
10. People vary in their appetite for physical risk (this is partly biological). They may object to anything from having to wear seat belts to vaccinations to being forbidden to buy certain drugs. What is a good balance between public safety and personal freedom? [A country with extreme public safety laws is often called a "Nanny State".]
