Fellowship of Reason Pages

What are FOR Meetups all about?

Fun! OK, they're also about providing a social outlet or community for non-theists: those who do not subscribe to a faith-based belief system, or belong to a faith-based community. We have settled on the term "non-theist" as a general term that might include atheists, freethinkers, humanists, agnostics, brights, and possibly other 'labels.' FOR regards reason (vs faith, mysticism, or superstition) as the best guide to knowing the world and ourselves (including our emotional needs). Other values found in the FOR community include: the importance of freedom; individual rights and responsibility; benevolence, fairness, and respect toward one's fellow humans; pursuit of individual happiness and well-being (flourishing in this life); and fellowship, of course!

Following are examples of the various FOR Meetup activities. Whether you're a sofa-loving bookworm, arts patron, or exercise/outdoor enthusiast, there's something for you- and somebody to do it with!

1st Sunday: FORum: our monthly program in which speakers present on various topics, including ethics, ideas, historical events and persons, etc.; followed by discussion and social luncheon

all other Sundays: FOR Runners: a morning run or walk at Candler Park, followed by breakfast at the Flying Biscuit (some folks just show up for the breakfast part)

1st and 3rd Tuesdays: Taped Lecture and Discussion Group: potluck supper, followed by recorded lectures on a variety of philosophical and other topics, and discussion

2nd Tuesday: Fiction Book Club: potluck supper, followed by a discussion of the month's selection; for titles follow this link:

3rd Saturday: Potluck Supper: food, drink, and conversation

Over time, other activities have arisen spontaneously from the suggestion, generosity and enthusiasm of individuals. Some unaffiliated activities are also regularly attended. Examples of spontaneous and/or unaffiliated activities include:

family outings, such as the zoo, camping, pool parties, and lake parties
parent get-togethers
outings to the Atlanta Symphony
outings to Met at the Movies
outings to local theater
outings to local museums
philosophy seminars
philosophy cafe discussions
classic movie seminars
hiking trips
canoeing trips
rafting trips
national and international travel
