Attend Free Basic Electronics Information Session

Details

This open meeting will generally repeat every week as part of the Freeside open house when the classroom is available. This meetup is free but follow-on meetings that spring from these discussions may have an associated fees or materials costs.

There will be a short lecture on an electronics topic. (5-10 minutes) Upcoming electronics classes and activities will be itemized and described. (5-10 minutes.) The hosts and leaders will be introduced and given opportunity to tell about themselves. (10-15 minutes) Remaining time, if any, will be devoted to questions and answers. The meeting is scheduled to last 30 minutes but may run over on occaision.

Prerequisites: There are no prerequisites. This is an “information-only” meeting. No toolsor supplies are needed. Bring your curiosity and your questions. This is an outreachof Freeside’s education mission. You can get a head start by looking on the Internet for electronics topics to become exposed to the terminology and jargon. Electronics issurprisingly broad and each person is at a different point in the learning process. If you already have an idea for a project or even some questions this information meeting may take your knowledge to the next level.

We are in the midst of conducting a survey of members and visitors regarding topics of interest. So far, most responses indicate an interest in connecting computers and electronic circuits to real-world lights and motors. On Saturday, February 23, there will be a “Getting Started with the Arduino” class. On Thursday, February 28, there will be a “Building a Real-World Interface” class.

Other electronics topics will be discussed include: Voltage, current, resistors, inductors, capacitors, Ohms law, EMF, scrounging for parts, electronics theory, how to read circuit diagrams, building circuits from circuit diagrams, building simple circuits found on the web, reading datasheets, circuit construction techniques, circuit design, circuit analysis, interfacing electronics circuits to a computer, SPI, I2C, modular design, integrated components and, of course, working safely with electricity.

This meetup is for you if the project you are building or want to build involves electricity or electronics and you don’t know where to start.

Your electronics leaders for this series will be Chris Moore and Wayne Salhany. This class will be conducted by Wayne. For information about Wayne, see his LinkedIn profile.
