Christmas Lights Bike Ride around GJ!!

  • Albertson's Parking Lot

12th and Orchard Avenue, Grand Junction, CO (map)

  • What could be more Christmasy than a bike ride to gaze upon houses decorated with bedazzling Christmas lights? Okay, lots of presents and a bicycle under the tree on Christmas morning, but this is a close second. This will be a short bike ride, just an hour and a half or two hours, riding through some neighborhoods in the northern part of GJ. We'll start at the Albertsons at 12th and Orchard, head off to see some neighborhoods north of Patterson and end the ride by cruising through Crestview, a neighborhood that lights up like no other. We'll leave open the option of also riding to and from downtown GJ to check out the lights along the way and on Main Street (depending on how cold it is and how motivated we all are). Then we'll cap the night with coffee or cocoa at the coffee shop at the corner of 12th and Bookcliff.

Since the lights get better as we get nearer December 25, but the nights also tend to get colder, we'll plan on doing this ride on the evenings of December 7, December 14, and December 21, Saturday evenings all. Assuming the weather cooperates.

The best bike for this would be your "towner" or even your mountain bike as we'll be riding slow and in the dark. Bring head and tail lights, and lots of warm clothes, but be sure to dress in layers. There aren't any big hills on this ride so no worries there. Extra credit and bragging rights if you decorate your bike!

Anyone and everyone is invited, the more the merrier! Join us for what has become a Christmas tradition around here, won't you?

Sorry folks, but I gotta cancel this ride. I just got back from riding part of the route and the best word to describe it is "treacherous". The road is ice from curb to curb in many places. Makes for very nervous riding. If we did this ride I don't think it'd be so much a matter if you'd fall off your bike but how many times. Just too dangerous. If anyone is interested in what the planned route was you can drop me an email and I'll describe or map it out for you, then you can decide if you want to take a chance on it (or, better yet, use that car thing you have in the driveway!).

I'm going to try to get out and ride the route this afternoon or evening to check, but I'm concerned that there's going to be far too many icy stretches to make this a safe ride. Wet or packed snow conditions we can handle, but even knobbies won't help on ice. Unfortunately, not all of us have studded tires or a fat bike (I don't have either!). I'll post later whether or not it looks like this ride can happen. Complicating things is that the forecast is now calling for more snow.

Ron and I are going to check out the Parade of Lights, and plan on joining this ride on the 21st instead.

I didn't realize the Parade of Lights was this coming weekend. I'll sign up for Christmas Lights Bike Ride next weekend on the 14th.

Just an FYI for everyone who signed up, this is the same evening as the Parade of Lights in downtown Grand Junction. Since you signed up for this ride to look at lights I'm assuming you like to look at Christmas lights, and I wouldn't want you to miss the biggest event of the year. We'll be doing our Christmas lights ride again the following two Saturdays after all, but the downtown Parade of Lights is a one-time thing. Meanwhile, the long range forecast for Saturday is looking like low 20s for our ride, but I'm guessing that forecast could change depending on how much snow we get between now and then.

Did this last year and it was great fun. Dress warm and enjoy the lights!
