SF Hardware Startup Meetup May 30 - Sponsored by FitBit!

Hey Hardwarians!

Now that you guys have all recovered from the crazy week of MakerFaire:

It's time again for another SF Hardware Startup Meetup
(!!!): May 30th, Thursday, 6pm at the California College of the Arts! Our sponsor this week is FitBit - who you all know as the hardware startup (well grown-up now) who's doing great things in the quantified health/fitness space. Fitbit will be there to talk about some cool stuff they're up to.

If you want to DO A DEMO (!) then sign-up at the spreadsheet under the "May 30th" tab.

Volunteers: If you want to help out, talk to Robert Han: [masked]

Sponsors: If you know anyone who wants to help us do more of these: Tell me!

Venues: If you know a place in the SF area that can host our meetup: Tell me!

This was great! Thanks Nick. I liked the location, great to have the stage and then a place to mill about and meet people. Thanks for the opportunity to speak.

Folks, feel free to ping me if you know anyone interested in the CEO position at

Nat, I know someone that might be a great fit for the CEO gig at Founder of a tech company that's grown to 100M/year revenue, currently. He is in town this week. How should I have him get in touch with you? -- Jeff Schmidt

Looking for something productive to do tonight?

At 7pm at Hacker Dojo in Mtn. View, I'll be talking about how I source and deal with Chinese manufacturers and the strategy I use to keep them in check. I'll also touch on my past invention success and using it as a basic inventing template.

Don't wory. There will be other speakers, too, so you won't have to put up with me for too long.

Nick, great event. I always enjoy coming to this hardware meetup. No frills, pizza and drinks, and egos checked at the door. My feedback:

-The CCA location is beautiful. Inspired me to go back to school to be around learning. My note is the space was too big for the group, and lost the intimacy from entrance to back room and auditorium.
-Pizza + Drinks is a fantastic touch. Thank you FitBit, CCA and the other sponsors for adding that nice touch. Nothing worse than an empty stomach after a long day.
-A few pitches were not hardware. No offense to those software companies, best of luck. But this is a Hardware group.
-An interesting twist to this event we can test. Start with pitches/demos (20 minutes). Followed by Pizza and Drinks. The food and social function would follow the interesting ideas we hear from the inventors and spark conversation.

Nick, thanks for hosting such a great event. -Chris

Realizing that there is often a fair amount of socializing/networking time to an event like this, I was still disappointed that there was so much time dedicated to pizza without knowledge of that or format ahead of time.

It seemed like there were a lot of rooms at that particular location, but for some reason everyone ended up in a single small room. Maybe if signs or whatever directed people to spread out over a larger space it would be more comfortable to talk to people.

      May 31, 2013

    • Nick P.

Yea, agreed David R, I'm not sure why we needed to be in that little room with that amazing building! We'll figure it out.

any room for new demo-ers? spreadsheet full but I can add new lines

    1 · May 29, 2013

    • Nick P.

Hey Rachel - I think we're full up, and over capacity with the space as it is, so you'll probably not be able to get in unfortunately. You're welcome to come down to Santa Clara for the AWE meetup June 3rd though: http://augmentedworld...=

If it's any extra incentive to attend, Fitbit will be raffling off a Fitbit Flex! They are hard to come by these days so make sure to come by the table and put your name in the drawing!

Unfortunately, we won't be able to do a waitlist this time because it always gives us crashers ;-) The space we have is pretty tight, so we don't want to over-promise here. Instead, check out the Int'l Hardware Startup Meetup in Santa Clara!

    1 · May 20, 2013

  • Cédric H.

yeah, a waitlist would be awesome ;)
...or we'll have to enter by a window !

    2 · May 20, 2013

  • Kate R.

Yay! Another meetup and FitBit sponsoring! spots left. Will you be opening a waitlist for this?

    May 20, 2013

  • Nat m.

Hey Nick! I would love to talk about BRCK if possible, I can either do a Demo or would be more than happy to stand up and talk about how an African company hacked together a hardware project. Thanks!

Thanks FitBit. It will be good to see you again.
