For the month of September, we are moving our meeting to be a weekend event in conjunction with the Midwest Association of Professional Animators (MAPA). Read on for the details!
CinemaKC presents the first MAPA Animation Celebration.
More than a dozen local, national and international films have already submitted.
The Midwest Association of Professional Animators (MAPA) (http://www.kcanimators.net/search/label/MAPA%20News), and CinemaKC (http://cinemakc.com/) have joined together in bringing the Midwest its first and only Animation Celebration: a festival filled with art, concept design, motion graphics and, of course, character animation. Between Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, Flash, Premiere, and others used by the industry...there's a strong chance you'll see some Adobe products in action here!
In lieu of our JCCC meeting which would have been Thursday, September 6, we are instead joining forces with MAPA at the Boulevard Drive-in (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Boulevard-Drive-In-Theatre/115555805548).
Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012
1051 Merriam Lane
Kansas City, KS 66103
The Boulevard is the first 4K digital cinema drive-in theater in the country. Its projector is four times the resolution of Blu-ray/HD and the sound is DTS — all digital.
This rare opportunity will give student, amateur and professional animators a chance to screen, discuss and answer questions about their respective works side-by-side. Furthermore, the Boulevard's ground camera will give willing artists a chance to make their own silver screen debuts and explain their works before our live audience.
MAPA plans to have flyers printed by August 23. They also plan to hand them out to businesses before and on First Friday, Sept. 7.
The program Sept 8 begins early in the evening, at 5:00 with art vendors and a Mentor Center: a designated area for working professionals and students to network and get questions answered. There are already commitments from T2+Back Alley Films, as well as our group and KCVideoCore to provide mentors ready to take questions.
At 8:30, submission screenings will begin on the massive 100-ft Boulevard Drive-in screen. After careful consideration, films projected on the drive-in screen will be limited to Midwest entries. Submissions from outside the Midwest will be screened on monitors in the Mentor Center.
We will take a peek inside animation in schools throughout the KC metro area, including Blue Valley CAPS program, Johnson County Community College and the Kansas City Art Institute. We are still working on making connections with Olathe and Shawnee.
We will see some of the incredible works being created by local studios such as Bazillion Pictures (http://bazillionpictures.com/), Trinity Animation (http://trinityanimation.com/), T2+Back Alley Films (http://www.t2.tv/) and Branit FX (http://branitfx.com/), just to name a few.
All submissions should be on DVD or a .mov file in H.264. They must all include a complete credit list. There is no cost for submission. Deadline to submit is August 21, 2012.
MAPA can take ftp or DVD submissions.
Admission for the Animation Celebration will be $20 a carload. Proceeds go to CinemaKC, MAPA and to cover venue costs.
We will work on the possibility of carpooling for KCDesignCore group members to save money!
