What we’re about
Hello, and thanks for your interest in joining KCDesignCore — welcome aboard!
Our group was founded in 2007 as one of four official Adobe groups in Kansas City. We're designers, developers, digital photographers, freelancers, producers, in-house corporate marketing types, and interested students of all ages — focusing mostly on visually-oriented products in the entire Adobe Creative Cloud range, with a strong focus on Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, and other tools with a visual emphasis. If it's visual, we'll talk about it!
We usually meet on the FIRST TUESDAY of every month, but sometimes special events will change that schedule so always check the web site to see where our next meeting will be! As of fall 2024, we will be meeting at KCAI with a Zoom link for remote attendees! We continue to be open to new temporary or permanent venues, so if you'd like to host us, let us know!
Adobe provides us with great presentations, speakers, and prizes. If you're a regular participant in our group, you're very likely to take home some fantastic goodies. Twice a year, we are authorized to give away an entire year's subscription to Adobe Creative Cloud — basically "everything Adobe puts out for creatives" on a membership basis. Additionally, throughout the year we have giveaways based on your attendance and participation.
Whether you're just starting out with Adobe tools or you're an experienced designer, we look forward to welcoming you to our community. It's fun and nobody walks away empty-handed!
Be sure to check us out by looking for @kcdesigncore on Facebook, X, and Instagram, and join us on Slack!
(Due to the proliferation of spammers and scammers, we've had to resort to approving new members on an as-requested basis rather than letting Meetup auto-join new people. To join our group, we ask that you please use a "real" name and a "real" photo of yourself -- our group is composed of real people, not flowers, pets, or abstract designs. You're a visual type, but here's your chance to show us what YOU look like. Thanks for your understanding!)

Neuroaesthetics: The Biological Basis for Creativity
Marburg Room in Vanderslice Hall, Kansas City Art Institute, 4415 Warwick Blvd., Kansas City, MO, USJoin us on October 7th to take a deep dive into neuroaesthetics with our own Paige Stonerock.
Neuroaesthetics is the science of how we perceive the world around us, conceptualize beauty or space and how we can use the these principles to compose an emotional story through design. For example:
-
We experience a feeling of comfort and peace when we see symmetrical images and monotonal images. Color is a subjective and highly contextual concept. We perceive color entirely dependent on its environment/context.
-
Knocking an image to unsymmmetrical/ unbalanced (and the concept of balance can vary culturally) can cause actual physical discord in an art viewers body.
-
Contrasting colors can trigger a rise is cortisol and incite physical fear in the beholder.
-
You can weave an emotional journey through manipulation of emotional cues in design.
Then in the second part of her talk, Paige will discuss the biological process of creation. Drawing/ visual art can be done entirely in a pre-language area of the brain. Plus- how we can use positive psychology and neuroscience to increase our creativity.
In the latest positive psychology, we recognize the act of creation as fundamental to our health and wellness as eating well and exercising. Every day, we must “eat, sleep, breathe, move, connect, and create!
We hope that you can join us in person for this talk about the biological basis of our creativity. We will be meeting in the Marburg room of Vanderslice Hall at the KCAI campus.
