Learn how to get your beautiful code out into the world! This multi-part series will take you from "what's a server?" to "I've got auto-scaling Docker instances on Amazon ECS securely behind my ELB!"

In this first session on Basic Linux Skills, you will learn how to:

• Set up your very own server on Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cluster)

• Login to a Linux server remotely and navigate around it.

• Set up special permissions and make things nice and secure.

We'll also be using the server you set up in this session for future sessions, so make sure to commit to the series! Next workshop topics include: Web Servers and Networking; Automation, Monitoring, and Housekeeping; and Applications and Deployment.

For those on the waitlist or unable to attend, I'll be recording the session, and I'll attempt to live stream it at https://www.livecoding.tv/thebeege/, wifi quality permitting

What to bring:

• Your laptop, charger, and your curiosity!

• Join our private chat group on Slack. Sign up here: https://l2cla-slackin.herokuapp.com/

• (Optional) Small cash donation to support Opodz (http://www.opodz.com/), our host

Prerequisites ("Is this workshop the right level for me?")

• You know you want a web server to host your site(s) on, but you aren't even sure what exactly a web server is.

• WINDOWS USERS - You must download PuTTY.exe and PuTTYgen.exe (http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html). You must also download and install the WinSCP Install Package (https://winscp.net/eng/download.php#download2).

Schedule:

• 6:30pm - Introductions, optional project demos or short talks!

• 7:00pm - Let's start learning about web infrastructure!

• 9:00pm - Go out for food/drinks around the corner, if y'all are feeling social!

Parking:

• There's usually free street parking on Central Ave, and parking structures on 2nd St right next to Opodz. See this parking map from ParkMe.com: http://bit.ly/1iu6i8p
