What we’re about
Welcome to the London Cultureseekers Group!
If you're interested in exploring London's history & culture with other like minded people, then this is the only group you need to join! We are London's largest & most active cultural and history group!
We meetup 2-3 times a week to explore museums, art galleries, historical buildings, go on guided walks and attend history talks. Tour of the Barings Bank Art Collection & Archive! (NOW FULL)
Bank Tube Station (outside the station - come out of exit 3), Cornhill, London, GBTHE EVENT IS NOW FULL, I'VE CHOSEN 20 RANDOM NAMES FROM THE LIST OF ATTENDEES.
Come along on Wednesday 15th October for a tour of the Barings Bank art collection and archive!
About the collection & Barings Bank
Barings Bank was a British merchant bank based in London, and the world's second oldest merchant bank. It was founded in 1762 and was owned by the German-originated Baring family of merchants and bankers. The bank collapsed in 1995 after suffering losses of £827 million resulting from poor speculative investments, primarily in futures contracts, conducted by its employee Nick Leeson, working at its office in Singapore. The story was turned into a film called 'Rogue Trader', which came out in 1999.
The Dutch bank ING, purchased Barings Bank in 1995 for the nominal sum of £1. The purchase included Barings extensive art collection and historical documents going back to its formation in 1762.
We will have a 2 hour curator guided tour of the art that ING purchased from Barings. It is situated in the companies hallways and meeting rooms.
Please note: there is a limit on how many people we can take on the tour, so I will randomly draw 20 names out from the list of RSVP's 10 days before the visit. I will then let you know.
Its only open to Full Members only.
Cost
Tour cost is £7 donation per person (payable by cash or credit card on the day). The charge goes to ING's charities (DKMS - a blood cancer charity & Greenhouse Sports - a sports coaching charity).Could you also please bring some photo ID on the day please for when we enter the building.
The bank offers free wine and nibbles when we arrive.

About the play
‘Why this is very midsummer madness’
– Act III, scene 4’In this riotous celebration of life, Illyria is in the midst of a wild festival but amongst the excitement, not everyone wants – or is allowed – to indulge in the celebrations. The lovesick duke, mourning heiress and strait-laced steward to name a few.
Enter shipwrecked, grief-stricken Viola who must learn the rules of this new world – and the complex love tangle she’s thrust into. She soon finds that the lines between self-expression and excess, frivolity and frustration are thin.
In a world where emotions can be as changeable as the weather, will all of Illyria’s residents make it through in one piece?
The play was written in around 1601-2.

103 attendeesVisit the Imperial War Museum!
Lambeth North Tube Station (outside the station), Westminster Bridge Road, London, GBCome along on Sunday 19th October for a visit to the Imperial War Museum!
About the museum
Founded in 1917, the museum reopened in 2014 after a £25m refurbishment, which includes new WW1 galleries telling the story of the war.The museum has occupied the former Bethlem Royal Hospital site since 1936. It holds over 11 million items relating to wars fought in by Britain and the Commonwealth over the last 110 years. The museum also has seperate exhibitions on the holocaust, a family in war, the secret war (about spies & codebreaking) and paintings of war.
There is a lot to see in the museum, so best to just go round two galleries - the WW1 gallery is the recently refurbished one.
The visit should last 2 hours and is self-guided. We can't do a guided tour around the museum, but I can answer any questions whilst we are going around.
