Dinner 4 Humane Society @ Po Kong (only $19.50)

We are holding a fundraiser dinner for Vancouver Humane Society. All proceeds will go directly to VHS to support their highly worthwhile campaigns, such as:

Chicken Out: VHS has succeeded in convincing various municipalities, post-secondary institutions and restaurants to go cage free. They’ve also worked with Overwaitea Foods to introduce a test of egg signage that indicates method of production, so that consumers can understand how the hens are kept (a first in North America!) VHS just completed an internet petition campaign with over 45,000 signatures demanding that Tim Hortons pledge to source cage-free eggs. The petition was presented at Tim Hortons’ AGM in May.

Eat Less Meat and Eat Less Chicken: These projects are focused on giving consumers the information they need to change their diets in order to benefit their health, animal welfare and the planet by reducing their consumption of meat, especially chicken, which unfortunately is becoming a popular alternative to beef, pork and other types of animal-derived products.

Raising the Barn: VHS is working on making the 5 Freedoms a reality for farm animals.

The person who brings the most friends to this event will win a copy of Vegan: The New Ethics of Eating by Erik Marcus.

For only $19.50 including tax and tip, we will share this delicious menu at Po Kong, Vancouver's favourite veggie Chinese restaurant:

•Turnip Cake

•Tai Chi soup

•Sizzling Vegetarian Shishkabob

•Fresh Enoki Mushroom and Spinach Chow Mein

•Tasty Fresh Shitake Mushrooms [Okay, look, these are lightly deep fried, but that is the name of the dish--a super popular item on the menu, not the same dish as our last visit.]

•Bean Curd Skin Rolls in black bean sauce

•Spicy Green Beans

•Orange Cutlets

•Vegetarian Steak with black pepper sauce

•Sweet and Sour Pineapple Delight

•steamed rice

Heartfelt thanks must go to Po Kong for offering us a special discount so that we could keep the price low and still raise some money for charity.

Very good event. Exciting vibes. Good restaurant, food, and op to support VHS.
    Just two suggestions:
    (1) Tables of 10 make it difficult to talk, other than to people directly adjacent, espec when the room is noisy. Tables-for-10 may be inevitable at a Chinese veg rest., but smaller tables are nice if poss.
    (2) The food was good, but perhaps too much 'faux meat.' I would have also liked a few dishes of good old sauteed or stir-fried green and colored vegs. (It's not as if this was a group of carnivores, but at-least-near-vegetarians who like veggies!) But restaurants sometimes feel it's not interesting to do simple veg dishes. One person at our table, with a medical condition, got a heaping plate of sauteed broc, cauliflower and other vegs. A number of us said: Wow: Looks great! Nevertheless, the food we ate was very tasty. ...Also: the Po Kong serves brown rice, which would have been nice.
Thank you, Nancy, for all of your great work for these events!!

Wonderful evening. Excellent food and company. It was nice to exchange veg ideas with others at the table, and the opportunity to donate more at the end of the evening was fantastic.

Amazing event as usual. Check the pictures out for the food - delicious and plenty of it! The added bonus is supporting a worthwhile charity! The staff at Po Kong were very helpful and their delivery of the evening was exemplary. Each dish appeared in the right amount of time.

Dinner was excellent. We went there knowing no one and walked out having had fun, witty conversations. The atmosphere was charged with laughter and the knowledge that we were all there for a great cause: The Vancouver Humane Society. There must have been well over 100 of us? Thank you Nancy.

The food was excellent, and there was more than enough. Quite loud, but I guess that's to be expected for a 100+ person meetup. A positive experience :)

Classic "Bo-Kong" dishes, terrfic company and a fundraiser for a worthy cause! What's not to like?
I would also have paid a higher price quite happily for the amazing amount of food.

Thank you so much to everyone who helped make this possible. We raised hundreds for VHS thanks to you and to the donations in the rice pot passed around at the end. Thanks, Kate, for suggesting it.

Jenna, we can pick you up wherever you want. We are coming from the North Shore and can go over Lions Gate or the Ironworkers. Please feel free to call me on my cell, [masked]. Not between 9:30 and 10 or between 2:30 and 3:30 (meetings) but any other time is ok.

I am wondering if anyone is coming from the West End to this event. My electric bike is in the shop, and I don't like taking the bus if I can avoid it. I will share gas costs, etc. I could meet at the broadway and cambie skytrain station at 6:30 or 6:45 p.m.

We promote Earthsave Canada, as you can see from our about page and our member profiles, but we are a separate group. ESC is now focusing on being a national organization, rather than a local dining and potluck group.

Hi Kathy, Earthsave doesn't have anything to do with this dinner. We are huge supporters of Earthsave Canada but have no direct affiliation with them. Send me an email and we will work something out.

Thanks, Nancy! She's only 4 but a treasure and is a veganist herself. :) I am happy to pay for her to benefit VHS!

No problem at all to bring children, but we can't offer a different child price (only at this event) because it is a fundraiser for VHS.

    June 12, 2012

  • Marianne

This looks fantastic! Before I sign up, is this strictly for adults? Or is a well-behaved child allowed?

I'm allergic to sesame, so I am always I bit worried about set menus... Do you know if the menu above is safe or can be adapted so it does not contain sesame (seeds and paste, mostly - small amounts of oil or whole seeds is not so problematic)?

    June 11, 2012

  • Nancy

You could pay in advance for this dinner at another event. Paypal works for anyone with a credit card and even for those without.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
