Lean Coffee

  1. Everyone offers topics they are interested in discussing by writing them on index cards
  2. We vote on each of the topics to prioritise.
  3. We discuss each topic in turn for 5 minutes.
  4. At the end of 5 minutes, we decide whether to keep discussing the topic or move to the next one.
  5. At the end of the overall Lean Coffee session, we run a quick retrospective.

I found this article interesting. More in the context of velocity and uncertainty: http://pivotallabs.com/its-the-volatility-that-will-kill-you/

Another angle, and this is more from the innovation/entrepreneur angle, is that there is opportunity to be exploited within uncertainty. If there is no uncertainty in the project, what is the value you are looking to generate? In that respect, keep your stakeholders focused on understanding that, and the value you incrementally deliver, could help in shaping expectations and building trust.

Thank you for your insight and providing a useful article to read. I suggested a potentially good topic to discuss but unfortunately I blanked out. This was a first for me and I am taking it positively. I was discussing this topic based on my work experience. The external uncertainty factors in my work environment were very high as the city of Karachi experiences constant interruptions due to strikes, weather, violence, power breakdown etc. I usually try to add as much lag time in my projects as possibly can to cater to this level of uncertainty. The delay in the deliverables due to uncertainties are usually tackled by risk management using best probable time of delivery by different estimation methods. The other way might be the use of change management to create a level of empathy with the stakeholder so that there is an understanding of risks involved. I wanted to know how it is done here and can it be done effectively in Agile framework.
