Summer Lecture 2013: Off-Camera Flash on a Budget

  • Sep 12, 2013 · 7:30 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Details from the Instructor (Ely):

This lecture/ demonstration  is aimed at providing attendees with the knowledge to make informed decisions about getting their small flash off of their camera to allow for far greater control and creativity.  Below is a detailed outline of the topics we will cover.  What makes this this lecture different than any other lecture/ seminar/ article/ youtube video is that I dont have a vested interest in SELLING you anything!  That means I can give you the straight story on what works, what does not, and how you can can dip your toe in the remotely triggered flash pond without spending a boatload of money.   You are probably thinking " yeah yeah, I have heard that line about not alot of money before and clearly their version and my version of not a lot of money are not the same"  So here it is right up front, no nonsense:  What I will talk about during this lecture will be options that range from FREE up to a about $150.  That $150 assumes you dont even own a flash yet!!!

So come join us, learn a little something, hang out with some cool people and have a few drinks and leave armed with the knowledge and confidence to make some inexpensive purchases to help get your photography to the next level...

A hand out sheet will be provided with the specific makes and models and even current prices of the equipment being discussed and demonstrated.

It was very informative; I learnt a lot. Thanks Sally for organizing and Ely for sharing his experience with us.

Thank you to those who attended this lecture. My apologies for the situation at the venue - I did confirm the reservation for 25 people over the phone... twice, but they didn't save enough seats for all of us. Kettle of Fish was more accommodating in the past so I was quite disappointed with management. Aside from that, I feel that Ely gave some great advice on shopping for lighting equipment and the handouts he provided were very useful, which included different types of models and prices.

thank you Ely for an interesting and informative presentation on flash and flash sync issues - a topic that for me, i was generally in the dark about. You were able to keep the lecture moving and focused under difficult conditions -

RSVP list is now closed and currently full. For those on the list - I will be taking attendance tonight. Please review all the details above. Make sure you purchase at least one drink from the bar as a courtesy to the owner who allowed us to use his space. And don't drink on a empty stomach. Eat something before you arrive or bring snacks. They do not serve food at the venue. Looking forward to tonight's lecture. See you soon... :)

For any of you that do not have work obligations, my goal is to be at the venue about 6:30 with some food, to relax a bit while eating, start prepping for the workshop and drinking a beer to help put me in a happy state of mind. I will gladly entertain any question any of you have with priority given to those that buy me a beer :-).

is there a dinner menu? - and has any one tried the food?

    September 9, 2013

    • Sally

There is no food at Kettle of Fish. It's just a bar with a lounge. I suggest everyone to grab a bite before you come to the lecture. Not a good idea to drink on an empty stomach.

      September 10, 2013

    • Ely

If I recall correctly Kettle does not mind people bringing food in to the establishment and I have even seen people bring in whole pizza pies

Venue reservation has been re-confirmed. Please note that everyone on the RSVP list "MUST" by at least one drink as a courtesy to the bar for allowing us to host this event there. Thanks!
