Intro to Git/Github

Details

Open source software (OSS) development is all about social coding - an open, collaborative approach to product development. Github has stood out as a top resource for developers to share code. During this meetup we're going to have a quick introduction to using Git as version control and Github functionality for managing collaborative projects and also of course have some time to socialize :)

Before you arrive:

Our goals for this session are:

Reference Materials:
• Git Guide (http://rogerdudler.github.io/git-guide/)
• Try Git (http://try.github.io/levels/1/challenges/1) (a simulated environment)
• OpenHatch training missions (http://openhatch.org/missions/)
• Simple branching git workflow (https://gist.github.com/jbenet/ee6c9ac48068889b0912)

Special thanks to our volunteers:

Our instructor for the evening is Ben Darnell, who has been coding in Python since 2002.

Teaching assistance for the evening provided by:
@six5532one (https://github.com/six5532one) @dianaliu (https://github.com/dianaliu) @punkrockpolly (https://github.com/punkrockpolly) @dirn (https://github.com/dirn) @katychuang (https://www.github.com/katychuang)

Audience:
Women and their friends who have no or limited programming experience. This event is welcoming and respectful of trans women. Men who want to learn Python are welcome as guests of women who are attending (please RSVP as well).

Our goal is to provide an environment in which women can develop their programming skills with confidence. You'll leave with the resources you need to continue your programming education on your own and with your fellow students. Our staff are predominantly from the NYC programming and open source communities.

Location:
Amanda and Kara of Tipping Point Partners (http://www.tippingpointpartners.com/) are generously hosting us at this conveniently located, beautiful, and spacious workspace. It's close to stops off the A/C/E, 1/2/3, N/R, 4/5/6, J trains. Take the elevator up to 7th floor, and make a right following the red footprints to the end of the hallway.

Refreshments:
We're going to have potluck style refreshments! Ideas to get your creative juices flowing include brownies crackers, fruit, sangria, cheese, chicken wings, veggie and dip..

If you would like to help out in any capacity (setup, cleanup, refreshments, photography & social media assistance), please find Kat or send a message to nyc@pyladies.com
