OWASP OC November Meeting - Smashing Machine Learning for fun and profit

Details

Speaker:Davi Ottenheimer, president of flyingpenguin

Title: Smashing Machine Learning for fun and profit

Abstract: Nearly everyone seems to be talking machine learning (ML) this or artificial intelligence (AI) that, as if they expect robotic nirvana to appear and whisk us all away to roomba-paradise. The diabolical warnings of every Sci-Fi book and movie ever made haven't been enough. That means it's up to the security industry to splash some realism back into the techno-optimist soup of dubious origins. Building on new adversarial ML examples that are achieving over 90% effectiveness, this talk gives harsh yet amusing examples of how and why we already are able to break ML creeping into every industry marketing pitch, from airlines to hospitals, social media to utilities.

Bio: Davi Ottenheimer is president of flyingpenguin, focused on cultural disruptions of emerging technology and the ethics of defense. He is a noted expert in global security operations and assessments, including digital forensics and incident response. He formerly was Global Head of Trust for EMC, a company known as the world's largest provider of data storage systems. Prior he was responsible for security at Barclay's Global Investors, the world's largest investment fund manager. And a decade ago he served as a "dedicated paranoid" at Yahoo where he was responsible for managing the security of hundreds of millions of mobile, broadband and digital home products. Davi received his postgraduate academic Master of Science degree in International History from the London School of Economics.
