London Playtest meetup

The June Meetup will be on Sunday 16th June from 1pm to 8pm.

If you've designed a game, bring it along and give it a play or just enjoy playing other people's prototypes in a friendly and constructive atmosphere.

If you would like to bring along a new design, contact Rob Harris (Organiser) and we will add your game to the list.

Deadline for pre-registering games is 11:59pm on Friday 14th June. Be sure to include the name of the game, the amount of players, the expected duration and a brief description. If you bring more than one design, add a preference for which one you would like to show first. Please feel free to still bring extra prototypes on the day. They will be added to later playtesting rounds.

(Please note that as a condition of our use of the Jugged Hare, only food and drink bought at the pub can be consumed on the premises.)

You can follow the group's blog at www.playtest.co.uk

We also have a guild page on BGG: www.boardgamegeek.com/guild/1398

I had a lot of fun with playing all three games I played (Temple of Dooom, ConStarlations& Unfair). Looking forward to next month already!

thanks for helping me reinvent unfair... real eyeopeners, you guys were/are

Great day of testing, obviously this group is going from strength to strength. Thanks to those that played my games and for the feedback and enjoyed playing "send in the clowns" and "imperialism in space".

Looking forward to next month already :)

Dave - thank you for testing 'Clowns' for me. I also very much enjoyed your 'Star' game. Please disregard my suggestions for changing it - it works very well as it is now. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

      June 19, 2013

    • Dave C.

:-) It's always good to look for new ideas and different ways of doing thingd though. Just making up a proto version using dice to see how different it is - will be much cheaper to produce and post with dice.. but need to think of a black hole mechanic... :-)

  • Andrew B.

A big thank you to those who playtested two of my designs 'Send in the Clowns' and 'Brent Crude'.

This session proved that Clowns scales up to 5 players with no problems at all (perhaps is even better than with 2-3 players) AND the theme appeals to youngsters (at least until boredom sets in)!

And the marathon session of Brent Crude (albeit with many interruptions) has proved that the latest mechanisms have reinstated the player interaction that I had recently designed away.

All in all, I am a very happy games-maker this Monday morning.

And a big thank you to Rob for making all this possible - excellent organization yet again.

    • Fabian

Hi Andy, I really enjoyed Brent Crude, thanks for that. i would certainly be up for playing it again! Nice closed economy.

      June 17, 2013

    • Andrew B.

Thanks, Fabian, for your very positive comments and for all your suggestions both during and after the playtest. I have already played it again (3-player) with the suggested changes and they are definitely an improvement. Will bring along again to a future playtest meet.

Great event, really well organised. Particularly enjoyed the word game in the third round. Suspect I would probably buy that if it were available.

Fantastic Meetup - really a lot of great people. Thanks to the guys who played Screenplay with me - we wrote two films in the time it'd take to watch one! Had an awesome time - I shall return!

I had a great time - lovely to meet you all. Thanks for letting Jackie play, as well. Jazz - you should know that as I was putting her to bed tonight, she announced "I have 5 sheep - I win again!".

Hi Helen. I was unable to attend but it was great to hear that both you and Jackie enjoyed our game. Sounds like we have our youngest fan!

Great as always, and a ton of new faces this time

    1 · June 17, 2013

  • Brett G.

Big turnout and a big success. Great to see everyone again, and also to see so many new faces! Welcome all!

Steve, Dave, Kim & Jenny enthusiastically helped me "stress test" "Angkor Thom" with 5p — and, all things considered, it went very well. Couple of really good insights and lots of entertaining chat! I sneaked a 1-point margin of victory over Jenny, but I think if I played with the same group again, I wouldn't have a chance! ;)

And Gary and Katarina helped Matt and me try out the latest iteration of "Artisans", which also was a success, although the design is younger so many more of elements are still in flux. Lots of really good things in there; as ever, the trick is in revealing the good stuff and reducing the managerial overheads elsewhere!!

Another fantastic meetup, great variety of games, good to see lots of new faces!

Does anyone have a reasonably modern HD video camera that they would be happy to bring along to the Playtest event on Sunday? We did some filming at Expo and it would be nice to cut it into a promo video with some footage from a Playtest meetup. Please post here or contact me via meetup if you can help.

    Thanks, Rob

    June 14, 2013

    • Dave C.

I've got a camera with HD I can bring, sounds not great but the picture quality is good.

      1 · June 14, 2013

Thanks, Dave. That will be great. I'll bring my laptop, so I should be able to download all the footage afterwards. Cheers, Rob

    Hey guys,

I'll be coming down on Sunday. I'm too late to register my prototype, but if there's space/time/inclination I'll be playing Screenplay - the movie-writing story-game.

If there isn't, it'll be pleasure to play your games and meet you all!

    - Ed

    1 · June 14, 2013

    • Edward C.

For the sake of completeness, and in case the gods take pity and list me, the game takes 2 hours to play with 3-5 players. You'll write your own film full of twists, turns and action, baby!

      1 · June 14, 2013

    • Rob H.

Hi Ed. The deadline is midnight, so I'm pleased to say you made it in time, although you'll need to RSVP as well so I can check the numbers. I've added your game, Screenplay. Sounds like fun. See you there. Cheers, Rob

      June 14, 2013

  • Adam

I'll be bringing Fiefdoms (for hopefully the last time) and a quick two player war game called (entirely without permission) Command and Colours - Skirmish. See you all then.

    • Rob H.

Games added to the list. Roughly what is the duration of C&C-S? So I know where to put it in the schedule. Cheers, Rob

      June 13, 2013

    • Adam

I'm not sure as it will be the very first time out. Definitely under an hour, maybe around thirty minutes.

      June 13, 2013

  • Andy O.

Well I haven't got as far as long as I'd have liked with my new trading game, nor Airline Magnates, but I'll bring along Terror at Graveport.

P.s. I probably won't arrive until between 2 and 3, so can this go in one of the later rounds? If we get 5 again its 1.5 hours with setup and explanations

      June 12, 2013

  • Rob H.

Just a quick reminder to everyone that in order to get your prototype on the provisional list, you will need to pre-register your game in these comments or by email to me by 11.59pm on Friday 14th June, listing name, duration, amount of players and a short description. You can still bring unregistered prototypes on the day, but priority will be given to the pre-registered games.

    June 12, 2013

  • Helen W.

    Hope to be there

Would like to give Brent Crude another outing, plus a brand new design 'Send in the Clowns'

    1 · June 10, 2013

    • Andrew B.

'Send in the Clowns' is a card gamne for 2-4 players that takes 15 minutes per player to complete. The aim is to have the three best dressed clowns in your troupe, by matching the coloud and patterns on their hats, shirts, trousers, and shoes - while other players swap the clothes in your wardrobe for their own.

      2 · June 11, 2013

    • Rob H.

      List updated. Sounds like fun.

      June 11, 2013

  • Brett G.

    Rob,

I think Matt's already clued you in to our two co-design prototypes:
    — Trinity (dice & cards, 2–5p, mid-weight strategy)
    — Artisans (dice & worker placement, 2–5p, mid-weight strategy)

I will have Angkor Thom with me too — love to playtest it either 2p or 5p, if possible (city building, light strategy, 60 mins)

Probably won't bring anything else this time, unless it's something completely new that I can conjure up between now and Sunday! ;)

I'm also going to bring a revised version of Fishy Business (now fishier than ever), if there's enough time/people for that. 45 mins, light Eurogame about exploring the sea and catching fish and selling them to contract, 2-4 people.

    1 · June 5, 2013

  • Andrew R.

I'm aiming to bring two very early prototypes - Warbot Peacetime Jobsearch, a game about finding new jobs for armoured death machines; and Cursed Temple, an asymmetric evolution of Zombies at your Heels. Both target 3-4 players :)

    1 · June 4, 2013

    • Rob H.

Hello Andrew. What are your expected durations for the games? Cheers, Rob

      June 5, 2013

    • Andrew R.

Let's call them both an hour, even though the target playtime is 30 minutes - both will be very rudimentary and almost certainly unbalanced, and may need rules changes on the fly. Even then, a flaming nose dive into the turf is not out of the question...
