London Playtest meetup

The September Meetup will be on Sunday 15th September from 1pm to 8pm.

If you've designed a game, bring it along and give it a play or just enjoy playing other people's prototypes in a friendly and constructive atmosphere.

If you would like to bring along a new design, contact Rob Harris (Organiser) and we will add your game to the list.

Deadline for pre-registering games is 11:59pm on Friday 13th September. Be sure to include the name of the game, the amount of players, the expected duration and a brief description. If you bring more than one design, add a preference for which one you would like to show first. Please feel free to still bring extra prototypes on the day. They will be added to later playtesting rounds.

(Please note that as a condition of our use of the Jugged Hare, only food and drink bought at the pub can be consumed on the premises.)

You can follow the group's blog at www.playtest.co.uk

We also have a guild page on BGG: www.boardgamegeek.com/guild/1398

Thanks Brett, thanks Rob. Today we had a group of biologists in the café and they are designing a game to teach evolution. It's looking good for a playtest event in the café some time in the future!

Thanks again to all of the designers and playtesters who came to the Playtest London September meetup last weekend. Just updated, here is the BoardGameGeek geeklist, which lists all of the prototypes played at each monthly playtesting session. Feel free to leave comments there, make additions or correct mistakes.

I work at Thirsty Meeples, a new board game cafe in Oxford. We are keen to get involved with designers, promote games, get people excited about games, etc. I'll be a first time attendee so come talk to me! :-)

    4 · September 13, 2013

    • Brett G.

Hey Terry! Do come and introduce yourself (we exchanged tweets a while back about my game Divinare) — I hope to make it to Oxford soon... My design colleague, Matt Dunstan, can't make Playtest this week, but I think you're expecting him in Oxford in a few weeks to do a Relic Runners/DoW day? Anyway — do say Hi!

      1 · September 14, 2013

    • Terry O.

Thanks for the welcome. Really excited about tomorrow! Matt will indeed be taking part in our 'Week of Wonder'.

      September 14, 2013

  • Brett G.

Rob: Slight change of the proto-plan!

Angkor Thom can take the day off — I would rather bring a new version of Nova instead (3D domino-building game, 3 or 4 players, 30 minutes). I can definitely get a game of that *and* a hand of Divinare Dice into the same slot, since both are short, and neither too taxing for folks who prefer lighter fare!

    That'll be more productive. ;)

    September 13, 2013

  • Peter B.

I will be bringing "Zambezi" on Sunday.

Two to eight players - will take about (15 mins x number of players) to play. Ideally looking for about 5 playtesters, but can play if I have at least one volunteer!

    A light, fun game:

"Sail your tugboat down the Zambezi River, avoiding the crocs and rocks, collecting gold, silver and diamonds along the way. Race against the other tugboats to be the first to cross the finish line and score extra points."

Game mechanic: Play cards to move along the river, burn fuel to obtain extra cards. Manage your resources, which are fuel and crew members (crew members fall overboard when you hit rocks!).

    First timer!

I'll be bringing Screenplay - the collaborative storytelling app-game in which you write your own movie. 2-5 players (including myself). Works best with 4. Times are dependant on group, but last time we fitted two games into a session.

    Looking forward to it!

    3 · September 13, 2013

    • Rob H.

Added to the list. Looked like a lot of fun last time.

      September 13, 2013

I would quite like to do a blind playtest of Fishy Business, would that be OK? 2–4 players (pref 4), light Eurogame about exploring the sea, catching different types of fish, and selling them against contracts. So with me present and able to answer questions, but the players puzzing out themselves how to play it from the written rules. The game normally takes about 45 mins but say add another 15 for the rules-grappling? And ideally with new players who haven't done it before.

Printed out. Will read before we meet and give you my feedback in person, if I have any.

      Thank you Bez!

      September 13, 2013

  • Andrew R.

I'll bring the next edition of Cursed Temple (now with icons!) - 45 minutes for 3-5 people. Also Dexikon, which I've made a few changes to after some blind playtesting... (50 minutes, 2-5 people)

    September 13, 2013

  • Behrooz S.

    I'll be there for sure!

I'm bringing my kickstarter-themed game. 100% less spatial tile laying.

Crowdfunder - light economic game about kickstarter, 60ish mins, 2-4 players (Behrooz Shahriari)

I'd much prefer to have 4 players if possible.

I'd also like to bring my brand new game tentatively titled 'not fluxx' but that will probably be too short for a main round. Hoping for 10 min playtime. Could play before/after?

    1 · August 26, 2013

    • Behrooz S.

Many thanks, Cat! I usually stay till late, so that'd be great!

David, I don't actually like Fluxx. I love the idea of humour coming from the interaction of mechanics, as opposed to the flavour (as you see on SJ Games, specially Munchkin). Having to pick up 1 card then 'play all' a few times amuses me.

I just consider the potentially infinite playtime a serious flaw. IMO, 'game-breaking', when I've seen a considerable % of our games abandoned after 40-60 minutes.

I liked Danish Frank's 'Unfair' and decided that I'd like to try my hand at reinterpreting some of the ideas he came up with. I e-mailed him and think he's not bothered about me doing so. In any case, this game is basically 'inspired' by Fluxx and Danish Frank's 'Unfair' prototype.

      2 · September 13, 2013

    • Behrooz S.

The game is meant to be 50% luck, 40% politics and 10% skill.

      September 13, 2013

  • gavin

Slight change of plan. I will not be bringing 'Particle' so instead I will bring 'Yellow Jersey - Tile edition', 4 players, 45 mins, cycling game.

    1 · September 12, 2013

  • gavin

I will bring 'Hole of Doom'. 4 player, dexterity, 20 mins. I will also bring 2 copies of 'Particle'. 2 player, abstract, 10 mins. Both these games are designed by Samuel Murray. Maybe both games could be fitted into 1 slot.

Please note the the deadline for pre-registering games for playtesting at this meetup is midnight this Friday 13th (eeek!)
It's okay to bring prototypes on the day without registering, but priority will be given to games added to the list above.

Feel free to add a comment here or drop me an email via Meetup.
Look forward to seeing you on Sunday!

I'll be bringing Adapt or Die: Cro-Magnons coming. Plays 3 to 4 but in the time best we stick with 3p which is 90 mins. Looking for input to make the last turn feel less inevitable :)

    1 · September 8, 2013

    • David M.

If there is time or a slot I do also have a card game called The Joust. It's a bluffing game. Two players. Each Joust averages 5 minutes and a whole tournament 30 mins. Would be happy to share a slot with someone else with this game.

I like the new title. Added to the list.

      September 11, 2013

Very much looking forward to Sunday!

I shall definitely be bringing all-new versions of the following, both co-designs with Matt Dunstan (who can't make it this time):
    — Trinity, Roman-themed card & dice game, 2–5p, 60-75 minutes
    — Artisans, "cube machine" game, 2-4p, 60-75 minutes (which is now almost entirely dissimilar from the earlier proto called 'Artisans'!)

I will also have with me two of my own games:
    — Angkor Thom, city building game, 2-5p, 45-60 minutes
    — Divinare Dice, super-quick dice game inspired by Divinare, 2–4p, 20-30 minutes

Playtesting priorities are Trinity and Artisans, since Matt and I wasn't to polish them before Essen. However, if I can sneak in a play of Divinare Dice, too, then it would be good to get feedback/ideas on a possible new theme for them game.

    See you all Sunday!
    Brett
